List of 10 Google products which are no more in the market
Google has a list of products and services that were shut down rather quickly or in some cases, stuck around for a long time and simply outlived its usefulness or was replaced by a better app.
Google’s timeline is peppered with innovations and achievements that today have become something that pops up in your radar as you go through your everyday routine. But Google also has a list of products and services that were shut down rather quickly or in some cases, stuck around for a long time and simply outlived its usefulness or was replaced by a better app.
A quick rundown of the top ten products and services that Google has shut down in recent years has been listed below:
Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL
The first Google ‘smartphones' seems to have already reached the end of its life with Google removing both smartphones from its online store, Google Store. The fact that both the smartphones have been removed from the store is a clear indicator that the smartphones have been discontinued by the company. Google has only sold 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017 according to IDC.
Google URL Shortener
With Google shifting its focus towards the possibilities of Firebase Dynamic Links, which are short links which work with both smartphones and desktops easily, Google has announced its decision to shut down its link shortening service - Google Shortener.
Google AR platform Tango
Google's newest AR project ARCore will be replacing Google's first augmented reality project Tango. The support services for Tango was turned down since March 1, 2018.
Google Spaces
Google Spaces was launched in 2016, it was conceptualised as a platform where small groups could interact and share ideas and content.
Google announced that they will be using what they learned about interactions between small groups and apply it to their existing products, and that they will close down the app on April 17, 2018.
Google Chrome apps
Google informed Chrome app developers through emails that though apps which have already been installed will continue to function, the functionality will be removed in the first quarter of 2018.
The ‘app' section of Chrome Web Store was shut down for Windows, Mac and Linux versions of Chrome (but not ChromeOS).
GTalk
The messaging platform GTalk has been around since 2005 and has been replaced by Google Hangouts. Google Hangouts was launched in 2013.
Google Captcha
Captcha (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans apart) was shut down in March of 2017. The aim of Google Captcha was to ensure that robots will not spam websites. The Google Captcha was replaced by Google reCaptcha.
Titan drone project
Google appropriated drone maker Titan with the aim of bringing internet connections to remote places in 2014. But the Google parent Alphabet shut down the program from X division, the reason for this was because the economics didn't work out.
Google Site Search
Google Site Search allows web publishers to allow the company's search technology to be applied to their websites. The service was started in 2008.But it was announced in February 2018 that the sales will be discontinued by April 1, 2018.
‘Now on Tap’ feature on Google Assistant
‘Now on Tap' was a feature which allowed the user to search for whatever was on the screen. Google has now removed the ‘Now on Tap' feature found in Android devices.
