Faster UPI Transactions Roll Out in India: Major Upgrade for Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm Users
Starting from June 16, 2025, UPI users in India will experience faster transaction times. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has implemented new guidelines to expedite the processing of UPI transactions. This change affects popular apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm.
Previously, completing a UPI transaction could take up to 30 seconds. Now, with the updated rules, this duration is reduced to approximately 15 seconds. This improvement applies to both sending and receiving money through UPI platforms.

Enhanced Transaction Speed
The time required to verify a transaction status or reverse a failed payment has also been shortened. Earlier, users had to wait up to 30 seconds or more for confirmation on whether their money was deducted or returned. Now, this process takes just 10 seconds.
Consider a scenario where you pay Rs 500 at a store by scanning a QR code with your bank's app. The app sends a payment request through NPCI's UPI system to the merchant's bank. Previously taking about half a minute, this entire process now completes in just 15 seconds.
Improved Response Times
NPCI has revised the protocol for banks and payment apps regarding pending transactions. Apps previously waited 90 seconds before verifying transaction success. Now they can check within 45 to 60 seconds after initiation, ensuring quicker responses during technical issues.
This update not only accelerates UPI payments but also reduces confusion when transactions fail or hang. Users often worry when they don't receive instant confirmation or when funds are deducted without success messages. The reduced wait time provides clarity and confidence in such situations.
Automatic Failure Marking
If a transaction doesn't reach the UPI system due to network failure or technical timeout, it will now automatically be marked as failed. This prevents apps from wasting resources checking the status of unprocessed payments.
To prevent system overload, NPCI permits each payment provider or bank to check transaction status up to three times within two hours of the attempt.
Upcoming Features for Enhanced User Experience
In August, new features will be introduced to further improve user experience and decrease system load. According to an NPCI circular dated May 21, these updates aim to streamline operations and manage traffic better during peak hours.

Users can check their bank account balances up to 50 times per day via UPI. A daily limit of viewing up to 25 linked accounts will also be enforced. These changes are designed to optimise system performance and prevent unnecessary network strain during busy periods.
Autopay mandates will have stricter rules: only one attempt and up to three retries will be allowed per automatic payment mandate. Notably, retries will be restricted to non-peak hours, which NPCI defines as between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm.
System Upgrades for a Reliable Payment Infrastructure
All member banks and payment platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm have been instructed to upgrade their systems by July 31, 2025. These upgrades are crucial steps toward future proofing the UPI ecosystem as digital transactions continue to rise.
The focus is on creating a faster, smarter, and more reliable digital payment infrastructure. By enforcing tighter controls and response benchmarks, NPCI aims for a smoother UPI experience for India's rapidly growing base of digital users.
These enhancements are expected to significantly reduce delays during digital payments, especially during high-traffic periods. As digital transactions surge in popularity, these improvements are seen as essential for maintaining an efficient payment system.
