Flash Players to go obsolete by 2020: Adobe
Adobe has announced that it will be done with Flash Player by 2020 with support from its partners at Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, and Apple while Microsoft has already been blocking Flash content.
Adobe is planning to end distributing and updating Flash by 2020. Major internet browsers including Chrome, Safari and Microsoft Edge have already been blocking Flash content since 2016.
Adobe announced today that it will be ending updates and distribution of Flash by 2020 giving time to creators to switch to viable options. A spokesperson informed, "We will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats."
Several websites still rely on Flash for gaming, education and video content. However, Adobe made it clear that it would continue to provide support to Flash users till 2020. While Microsoft made it abundantly clear that it plans to disable Flash in Edge and Internet Explorer by mid-2019. Google, on the other hand, plans to gradually disable Flash in few years. Mozilla Firefox users will have an option to choose which websites run Flash with Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) enabling them to use Flash up to 2020.
Apple will also provide Flash support till 2020 on its Safari web browser. Safari requires exclusive permission to run websites using Flash even if the Flash Player is already installed on the Mac.
With HTML5 standards implemented across most of the modern browsers, the need for Flash Player has been mitigated. Once Flash is completely removed across all the platforms there certainly will be an improvement in the security and battery life of mobile devices with a new update following soon after.
