Google Pauses Chrome 79 Update After Complains Of App Data Loss

Google updates for Chrome have a major flaw. The latest Chrome 79 update was found to be deleting data from Android apps accessed via Android's built-in WebView. Technically, the data is still intact, but it can't be accessed. Google has now paused the rollout of Chrome 79 on Android.

Google Chrome 79 Update Paused After App Data Loss

Google Chrome 79 Update Flaw Explained

Developers and users are complaining about the major issue with the Chrome 79 update reports 9To5Mac. The update is wiping away the data from third-party apps that use the WebView framework. The problem is that developers are unable to access the data, which is even worse for those apps that depend exclusively or heavily on WebView.

For instance, Twitter Lite is one of the apps that rely heavily on Google's platform. But there's no update which of the apps have been hit the hardest. According to Android Police, a bug was leading the user to tank app ratings. The root cause of the problem is that Chrome 79 switches the location of the web data storage and a failed migration process. This wipes away the data.

Google Fixing Chrome 79 Update

One Chromium engineer has asked users to "collect a list of affected packages" which suggests there is still some way to go in identifying and fixing all the impacted apps. Another Chromium engineer has marked the issue as P0 (highest priority) "Please understand that the team is working on a solution that minimizes the data loss, and that can be rolled out safely..." the engineer said.

Google is believed to be working on the fix. The company is reportedly finding a way like moving missed files or reverting to the older methods. Users will need to wait for the fix as it could take some time. For now, Google has paused the rollout of the update, but approximately 50 percent of the devices have already received the update.
