The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has submitted a new report to the government on data services standards, that if implemented can bring down the current data prices. The new report talks about the architecture based on interoperability and open-architecture that would bring down data prices to one-tenth of the current level.

As per IANS, the report was submitted by TRAI Chairman R.S. Sharma on "Public Wi-Fi Open Pilot Project" to Communications Minister Manoj Sinha. Sharma says, "This is an architecture based on interoperability and is a very robust one... like UPI and Aadhar."

Sharma informed reporters that this new model of the network has been named "WiFi Access Network Interface (WANI)". Further, the report mentions that the products available for consumption should begin from 'sachet-sized', that is, low denominations may be Rs. 2.

The new model explores new technologies to deal with the internet services. Cloud model is said to be implemented to tackle system authentication of the service provider and service seekers. Besides, accounting and payment settlement is also said to be managed by cloud under the new model. Sharma also added that there would be a central registry to authenticate the service provider and service seekers.

As per the report submitted by R.S Sharma, the person managing a router (in an area) would be called PDO (Public Data Office), the one managing 1,000 such routers would be called PDOA (Pubic Data Office Aggregator) and the one who develops an application would be called application provider.

Sharma also informed that there are only wireless networks and no wired connectivity in the present internet model; hence Wi-Fi comes out as the cheapest possible mode of the internet in India. Further adding to the report, Sharma said, "WiFi Access Network Interface would be independent of the BharatNet project".
