MacBook Pro M5 Pro & M5 Max Features and Specifications

At the centre of the refresh are the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. These chips use Apple's Fusion Architecture, which links two dies within a single system on a chip. Both versions feature a redesigned CPU with up to 18 cores. The layout includes six “super cores” and 12 performance cores for heavy, multithreaded workloads.

Apple states that the M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver up to four times faster AI performance than the previous generation. Compared with M1-based MacBook Pro models, Apple claims up to eight times faster AI performance. The GPU design now includes a Neural Accelerator in every core, which is aimed at speeding up large language model prompts and AI image creation directly on the device.

Graphics capabilities receive a major lift in these MacBook Pro models. According to Apple, users can expect up to a 50 per cent graphics performance increase compared with M4 Pro and M4 Max systems. The improvement is intended to help professionals working on 3D rendering, motion graphics and high-end video effects with smoother real-time previews.

The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory and offers 307GB/s of memory bandwidth. For more demanding AI training tasks and complex 8K video timelines, the M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory with 614GB/s bandwidth. Storage configurations also change, with the M5 Pro variants starting at 1TB and the M5 Max versions starting at 2TB.

Apple says the updated SSD in the MacBook Pro can reach read and write speeds up to 14.5GB/s. The company claims this is up to twice as fast as the earlier generation. These gains should help when handling large datasets, 4K and 8K video files and AI-heavy workflows, where fast access to storage is important.

The Liquid Retina XDR display continues to feature on the MacBook Pro range. It supports up to 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness and 1000 nits for SDR content. Buyers can opt for an additional nano-texture finish to cut reflections. M5 Pro models can connect up to two external displays, while M5 Max versions support up to four external displays.

Port selection remains focused on professional use. Each MacBook Pro includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed peripherals. There is HDMI support for up to 8K resolution output and an SDXC card slot for quick media transfers. MagSafe 3 handles dedicated charging. These options aim to support varied desk setups and external workflows.

Wireless features are anchored by Apple's new N1 chip in the MacBook Pro. The laptops support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, which are designed to offer better stability and higher throughput. These upgrades should help when working with large cloud backups, online collaboration tools or wireless accessories in busy network environments.

Battery life on the new MacBook Pro models is rated at up to 24 hours. Apple notes that performance remains consistent, whether connected to power or running on battery. Fast charging is supported, allowing up to 50 per cent charge in about 30 minutes when using a 96W or higher power adapter.

The MacBook Pro lineup also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support. Apple pairs this with studio-quality microphones and a six-speaker audio system featuring Spatial Audio. Together with the AI and performance upgrades, the refreshed MacBook Pro range is positioned for professionals in content creation, software development and AI-focused workloads.
