Apple Ships 4.8 Million Macs in Q1 2024, Fueled by M3 Chips
Apple's Mac lineup has seen a significant resurgence thanks to the introduction of the powerful M3 series chips (M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max) and the launch of new MacBook Pro models in late 2023. These developments have had a positive impact on the company's sales figures.
According to IDC, Apple shipped 4.8 million Macs in the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2024), representing a substantial increase from the previous quarter. This growth not only boosted Apple's global market share by 1% to 8.1%, but also secured it the fourth position in the worldwide market.

Strong Quarter for Apple Macs The surge in Apple's Mac shipments, a remarkable 14.6% rise in a single quarter, signifies a clear recovery for the company in this sector. Compared to Q4 2023's figure of 4.2 million Macs shipped and a 7.1% market share, Apple's recent performance indicates a positive trajectory, even amidst competition from industry leaders like Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Notably, the overall PC market also experienced growth for the first time in two years, with nearly 60 million units shipped in Q1 2024, signifying a market rejuvenation.

Market Recovery and Easy Comparisons This resurgence can be partly attributed to favorable year-over-year comparisons. The PC market witnessed a historic low in Q1 2023 with a decline of 28.7%. Remarkably, global PC shipments in Q1 2024 have reached pre-pandemic levels observed in Q1 2019, when 60.5 million units were shipped.
M3 MacBook Air Poised for Further Growth While the high-end MacBook Pro models with M3 chips contributed to the shipment increase, their premium pricing might limit volume growth for Apple. However, the recent launch of the more affordable 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air models injects optimism. These refreshed laptops boast a lower starting price and enhanced performance with dual NAND flash, potentially propelling further shipment growth in the upcoming quarter.
Apple's Pipeline: M4 and M3 Ultra Apple has also begun development of the M4 MacBook Pro. However, its launch might not occur in 2024 as the company has yet to unveil the M3 Ultra, the next-generation workstation-class SoC successor to the M2 Ultra.
