Lenovo has taken a bold step towards the ideal 2-in-1 laptop with the introduction of the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid at CES 2024. Recognizing the strengths of both Windows and Android, Lenovo aims to provide users with the best of both worlds in a single device.

Hybrid Functionality

In laptop mode, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 functions as a conventional Windows laptop, equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 75WHr battery. However, the magic happens when you detach the display, transforming it into an Android tablet. The tablet half boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of flash storage, and a 38WHr battery, all sharing the same 14-inch 2.8K OLED display.

Design and User Experience

According to a Verge reporter's hands-on experience, Lenovo has achieved a well-balanced design for their 2-in-1 laptop, addressing the usual top-heaviness. The conversion process is simple - just pull to disengage. While early versions may need some coaxing, Lenovo plans to refine this before the Q2 2024 launch.

Operating System Integration

The reporter also mentions that while the hardware is impressive, the software integration requires improvement. Presently, the Windows and Android sides function separately, necessitating manual file sharing. It remains uncertain whether Lenovo will enhance this communication before the launch. Currently, users essentially have a dual-purpose device, using Windows for work and Android for tablet-based content consumption.

Availability and Pricing

The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid is expected to ship in Q2 of 2024 with a starting price of around $1,999.

Lenovo's announcements at CES 2024 didn't stop at the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5. The ThinkBook 16p Gen 5, now on its 5th generation, comes with a 14th Gen Intel processor (up to an i9) and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060. What sets it apart is the introduction of the Magic Bay - a system of magnets and pogo pins on the laptop's back, facilitating easy attachment of accessories. The Magic Bay Studio, a new 4K webcam, is among the accessories, providing a glimpse into Lenovo's innovative approach to modular components.

The ThinkBook 16p Gen 5 will be available later this quarter, starting at $1,599. The Magic Bay Studio is set to release in April, starting at $199.99.

ThinkBook 13x Gen 4 and Legion Gaming Laptops

The CES 2024 showcase also featured the ThinkBook 13x Gen 4, a lightweight 13-inch laptop powered by Intel's new Meteor Lake CPUs. Weighing just 2.2 pounds with a magnesium chassis, it promises portability without compromising power. The laptop will be available sometime this quarter, starting at $1,399.

For gaming enthusiasts, Lenovo introduced a refresh of the Legion gaming laptop series. Notable is the shift in design aesthetics, moving away from the typical gamer aesthetic to a more understated white color option. The Legion 7i, Legion 5i, and Legion Slim 5 offer impressive specifications, including up to Intel Core i9 14900HX CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU. The Legion 7i, shipping in March 2024, starts at $2,099. The Legion 5i and Legion Slim 5 will both be available starting in April 2024, starting at $1,399 and $1,499, respectively.

With over 40 devices announced, Lenovo has renewed its lineup, including the ThinkBook and ThinkCentre series for business, the high-spec Yoga series for individual creators, and the Legion series for gamers.
