Microsoft’s New Feature Aims to Enhance Battery Life of Windows 11 Laptops

Microsoft is currently testing a new feature for Windows 11 laptops aimed at enhancing battery efficiency. This feature, known as adaptive energy saver, adjusts power-saving settings based on laptop usage rather than waiting for the battery to deplete. It promises to help users maximise their device's battery life.

The existing energy saver mode in Windows 11 activates when the battery level falls below a specific percentage. It reduces screen brightness, halts background apps, and postpones non-essential updates. However, the adaptive energy saver operates differently by assessing the workload on the laptop.

Adaptive Energy Saver: A New Approach

This innovative feature activates energy-saving measures when the system is not heavily loaded, such as during idle times or light tasks. It does so even if the battery charge is still high. Unlike the traditional mode, it maintains screen brightness, allowing users to work without noticing any change in display quality.

The primary benefit of this feature lies in its subtle power management capabilities. By not dimming the screen, users are less likely to notice its activation. Nevertheless, it pauses non-critical updates and stops certain background apps from running.=

Impact on Battery Life

Applications like OneDrive or Phone Link may not fully sync while this feature is active. Similarly, Windows Update might delay less important downloads temporarily. These actions collectively contribute to reduced power consumption and extended battery life during low activity periods.

This feature targets devices with batteries such as laptops, tablets, and handheld PCs. It is not applicable to desktop PCs, although Microsoft has previously introduced basic energy-saving tools for desktops to reduce electricity usage.

Availability and User Control

The adaptive energy saver has been rolled out to testers in the Windows 11 Canary Channel, an early testing group for new features. If successful in testing, it may become available to all Windows 11 users later this year.

Importantly, this feature is optional and requires manual activation through settings. Users can choose whether they want Windows to manage background power usage even when the battery isn't low.
