Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface Laptop Launched with Snapdragon X2 Plus and Advanced AI Capabilities

Microsoft has expanded its Arm-based Surface line-up with new 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop models powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. Announced at Snapdragon Summit, the devices focus on portable Windows computing, stronger on-device AI performance and longer battery life, rather than a major design overhaul.

The launch is also significant for Microsoft’s wider Copilot PC strategy. The company is positioning the new Surface devices as thin, quiet Windows machines that can handle more AI tasks locally, while still using the cloud where required. Microsoft says this can reduce latency, limit dependence on cloud calls and keep more data on the device.

New Surface PCs Focus on Local AI Performance

Microsoft says its Surface engineering team worked with Qualcomm Technologies during Snapdragon X2 silicon development. The goal was to tune the platform for sustained performance, efficient power use, quiet thermals and responsive AI features on compact Windows hardware.

Compared with the previous generation, Microsoft claims the new PCs deliver up to 17 percent faster Office productivity performance and up to 18 percent better battery efficiency. The company also claims more than 60 percent faster graphics performance and up to 95 percent faster local AI inferencing on the NPU.

These figures matter because Microsoft is increasingly building Windows features around hybrid AI processing. Some Copilot and Microsoft 365 experiences can run on-device, some in the cloud, and some through both. Local processing can be useful for tasks such as summarising notes, editing photos, generating content and interpreting pen input.

Surface Pro 12-inch gets Brighter Display and Ink Canvas

The Surface Pro 12-inch remains a compact 2-in-1 Windows PC that can work as a tablet or laptop. It is fanless, light and designed for users who need a portable device for writing, sketching, email, coding, note-taking and media work. The Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen continue to be sold as key accessories for the form factor.

Microsoft says the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip makes the new Surface Pro 12-inch more responsive for tasks such as summarising notes, annotating designs and editing photos. The company also says the device offers an extra hour of active web browsing compared with the earlier model.

The display has also been upgraded. The new 12-inch PixelSense touchscreen is 25 percent brighter and now reaches 500 nits. That should help visibility in brighter indoor settings and some outdoor conditions. Microsoft has also added a new Black colour option alongside existing finishes.

The Surface Pro 12-inch enclosure is made with 86 percent recycled content, according to Microsoft. This continues the company’s recent push to include recycled materials in Surface hardware, though buyers will still likely judge the device on performance, display quality, keyboard comfort and battery life.

A major software addition is Microsoft Ink Canvas. It is described as an AI-powered, pen-first experience for sketching, annotation, image generation and text summarisation. The feature supports visual, spatial and handwriting-based input. Microsoft says Slim Pen input gives Copilot richer context when interpreting a user’s work.

Ink Canvas will come pre-installed on the new Surface Pro 12-inch. Microsoft also plans to make it available through the Microsoft Store for other supported Surface and Windows devices. That should make the feature relevant beyond buyers of this specific model.

Surface Laptop 13-inch targets everyday Windows users

The new Surface Laptop 13-inch is aimed at users who prefer a traditional clamshell design. It has a full-size backlit keyboard, precision touchpad, aluminium body and a taller 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen. Microsoft highlights everyday use cases such as streaming, presentations, productivity apps and general work.

The laptop has a 13-inch PixelSense LCD touchscreen with a 1920 × 1280 resolution, up to 60Hz refresh rate and 178 PPI pixel density. Like the new Surface Pro, its display is 25 percent brighter and rated at up to 500 nits.

Under the hood, the Surface Laptop 13-inch uses the 6-core Snapdragon X2 Plus processor and Qualcomm Hexagon NPU rated at 80 TOPS. It will be available with 16GB or 24GB memory, and 256GB or 512GB storage options.

Microsoft claims up to 22.5 hours of local video playback on the Surface Laptop 13-inch. Real-world battery life will depend on display brightness, wireless usage, app mix and background workloads. Still, battery life remains one of the main reasons buyers consider Arm-based Windows laptops.

The laptop weighs 2.7 lbs, or around 1,225 grams. It includes two USB-C USB 3.2 ports, one USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. A 45W charger is included, and the laptop also supports USB-C charging.

Surface Mouse adds haptic feedback

Alongside the two PCs, Microsoft introduced a new Surface Mouse with integrated haptic feedback. The mouse can provide a physical response when a click registers, a window snaps into place or an object aligns on screen.

The new Surface Mouse has a redesigned ambidextrous shape and a customisable action button. The button can be used for Copilot access or everyday shortcuts. It supports Bluetooth 6.0, multi-device pairing and switching between connected devices.

Microsoft says the mouse is made with 30 percent recycled content. The company also claims it includes the most post-consumer recycled plastic used in any Surface mouse so far. It will be sold in Black and Platinum colours.

Pricing and availability

The Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch will be available from October 13 in select markets. Both PCs will be offered in Platinum, Violet and Black. Microsoft has not announced India availability in the supplied details, so local launch timing remains unclear.

Pricing starts at USD 1,149.99 for the Surface Pro 12-inch, which is approximately Rs. 1,10,260. The Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at USD 1,199, or around Rs. 1,14,960. The Surface Mouse is priced at USD 79.99, roughly Rs. 7,670.

For commercial customers, the Surface Pro 12-inch will also be offered with an optional 5G configuration. Business-focused features include Secured-core PC safeguards, Microsoft Pluton with TPM 2.0, Surface UEFI with Secure Patina and management tools under Surface Tools for Business.

The new Surface devices show Microsoft’s continued commitment to Arm-based Windows PCs and on-device AI. The bigger question is how well Snapdragon X2 Plus performs in everyday Windows apps, especially outside Microsoft’s own ecosystem. That will become clearer once the devices reach buyers and independent testing begins.
