WWDC 2026: Apple Announces macOS 27 Golden Gate with Design Refresh And Enhanced Apple Intelligence
Apple is preparing macOS 27 Golden Gate, the next main release for Mac laptops and desktops. The update follows macOS Tahoe 26 and focuses on refreshed design, a rebuilt Search system, and deeper Apple Intelligence tools, while dropping major new support for Intel-based Macs.
Unlike earlier presentations, Apple spends less stage time on macOS-only additions and highlights shared features across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. These shared changes include updated parental controls, Screen Time tweaks, a "bold new architecture" for Apple Intelligence, and wider Siri AI integration in system search.

macOS 27 Golden Gate Design and Interface Changes
On the visual side, macOS 27 Golden Gate adjusts the Liquid Glass interface that arrived with Tahoe. A new global slider lets users change Liquid Glass opacity across the system. Window corners gain a tighter radius for a more consistent layout, while sidebar icons regain colour as Apple is "reincorporating" older macOS design cues.
macOS 27 Golden Gate Search, Siri AI, Apple Intelligence
Golden Gate overhauls Search with a new indexing infrastructure that scans device content and adds fresh items almost at once. Spotlight benefits from this system and brings sharper Search in Photos and Mail. Users can type Siri AI questions directly into Spotlight and select several files, then ask Siri about them together.
Parental tools inside macOS 27 Golden Gate extend to Safari behaviour for younger users. In Apple’s browser, anyone under 13 is, by default, prompted before viewing certain websites. These controls sit beside changes to Screen Time, which also arrive as part of the wider Apple Intelligence update plan.
Golden Gate arrives after macOS Tahoe 26, which introduced a reworked Spotlight and a Phone app but drew criticism for the bold Liquid Glass redesign. Tahoe was the last substantial macOS release for Intel-based Macs, and Apple promises three years of security updates for those older x86 systems.
The relationship between Tahoe and Golden Gate, and the position of Intel Macs, is set out below.
| Version | Main additions | Mac hardware focus |
|---|---|---|
| macOS Tahoe 26 | Reworked Spotlight, Phone app, Liquid Glass look | Final major update for Intel-based Macs |
| macOS 27 Golden Gate | New Search system, Apple Intelligence changes, design tweaks | Ongoing focus on Apple silicon Macs |
Apple positions macOS 27 Golden Gate as a refinement of Tahoe 26, rebalancing the Liquid Glass design while deepening Search, Apple Intelligence, and child safety tools. The release also marks another step toward Apple silicon Macs, with Intel machines limited to promised security support. Antonio G. Di Benedetto reports on these changes.
