Asus Gaming V16 Review: Stealthy Yet Savage
Not every gaming laptop needs to scream for attention. I wanted a gaming laptop that doesn't look like a spaceship but still crushes where it matters most - performance. All the goodness without a price tag that makes my wallet cry. The Asus Gaming V16 seems to fit that bill perfectly. But does it really deliver that stealthy yet savage experience, or is there a trade-off? Let's find out.

- 144Hz Smooth Display
- Minimal & Lightweight Design (Under 2kg)
- Excellent Key Travel & Comfortable Typing
- RTX 4050 Delivers Solid Gaming Performance
- Upgradeable RAM & Storage
- Fast Charging with USB-C PD Support
- No Ethernet Port for Competitive Gamers
- Average Brightness for Outdoor Use
- Speakers Lack Deep Bass
- No Full-Size SD Card Slot
Display: Smooth, But Is It Vibrant Enough?
The 16-inch IPS panel (1920x1200) is all about high refresh rates, and at 144Hz, scrolling and gaming feel buttery smooth. Whether you're deep in a Valorant match, binging anime, or cutting through video edits, the motion clarity is solid, and viewing angles hold up well.

But let's talk about color accuracy, it's decent for casual use but not quite pro-grade. With 45% NTSC coverage, it's not the best pick for serious creators who need perfect color precision. For gaming and everyday content consumption? No complaints.
Brightness? Mixed bag. While it claims 300 nits peak, real-world use shows it maxes out at around 240 nits.
Overall, being a gaming first laptop, it manages to pull off a smooth and immersive display which is built for speed, however if you're into high-end color work or outdoor sessions, you might feel the limitations in terms of brightness. Indoors? No worries. Step outside? You might struggle a bit. Luckily, the matte anti-glare coating comes in for the rescue and does a good job of cutting down reflections.

Design & Build: Stealth, Lightweight, and Functional
At first glance, this laptop doesn't scream "gamer" and honestly, that's exactly why I was excited to check it out. I love powerful machines, but I'm not a big fan of flashy RGB lights and aggressive designs. If you're like me and prefer a laptop that looks sleek yet packs a punch, the Asus V16 might just be the perfect fit. No over-the-top RGB, no wild angles; just a clean, minimalistic design with a simple logo on the lid with all the essential performance that you need.
Now, let's talk about one of the biggest struggles with gaming laptops, portability. Most of them are insanely heavy, and carrying them around feels like a full-body workout. Asus in a way has addressed this by keeping the V16 under 2kg (1.95kg, to be precise, which is 105gms lighter than my editing beast Macbook Pro 16" 2021). Might not sound too light, but every 100g chop from a gaming laptop's weight makes a world of difference. I carried it from home to the office, then to a café and for once, my shoulders weren't crying for help.

It's still a 16-inch laptop, so it's not ultrabook-light, but the weight distribution is well-balanced.
That said, if you've got sweaty palms like me, this thing is a fingerprint magnet. I basically had to keep a microfiber cloth on standby at all times, or else it looked like I was handling it with greasy hands after a plate of butter chicken.
Credits where due, the feet are raised to allow a proper airflow from the vent to keep the temperatures in check.
In terms of port selection, the left side is more packed compared to the right, as it houses most of the essential ports. Here, you get a power connector, USB 3.2 Type-A, USB 3.2 Type-C, HDMI 2.1 port and a headphone jack. On the right side, there's a single USB 3.2 Type-A port.

While it does support dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for high data transfer speeds, there's no Ethernet jack. So, for competitive FPS players looking for the lowest possible latency, that's something to note. As a casual gamer, I personally can afford to trade it for compactness. However if that's a deal breaker for you, watch-out.
The ASUS Gaming V16 comes with a full-sized keyboard, including a dedicated numpad, and despite that, the key spacing is excellent. Typing on this keyboard is a delight, as the key travel feels satisfying.

Performance: Built to Game
Under the hood, there's an Intel Core 5 210H (2.2GHz base, up to 4.8GHz, 8 cores, 12 threads, 12MB Cache) coupled with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU (194 AI TOPs, 6GB GDDR6)
You'd be glad to know that both RAM and SSD are upgradable, which has become a rarity in modern laptops.
- RAM: up to 32GB of RAM (additional SO-DIMM slot)
- Storage: up to 1TB
I pushed the V16 to its limits across a variety of titles:
Forza Horizon 5:
- Ultra preset, 4x MSAA: 100+ FPS
- Visuals look stunning, smooth gameplay even without ray tracing.
Counter-Strike 2:
- High settings: 144 FPS stable
- Very High settings: 120+ FPS
- Competitive gamers will love it.
Cyberpunk 2077:
- Ray Tracing Ultra: Struggles at 40 FPS
- Ray Tracing Low: Boosts to 70 FPS, making it playable.
- Ray tracing OFF gives the best performance.
Even after long gaming sessions, thermals are well managed. Yes, the keyboard warms up a bit around the F2-F5 keys, but the WASD area stays comfortable. The large heat pipes, dual-fan setup, and separate heat vents get the job done as the cooling remains efficient.
If you're into competitive FPS games, you might miss an Ethernet port for ultra-low latency. While Wi-Fi 6 does a decent job, a wired connection would've been nice but again, in my use-case? I've got no complaints in this department.

Keyboard & Trackpad: Comfort Meets Control
The full-sized keyboard is surprisingly good. 1.7mm key travel gives it a satisfying feel while typing or gaming, and the well-spaced layout makes long sessions comfortable. The transparent WASD keys add a subtle gaming touch, and the blue backlighting keeps things clean without being too flashy. One quirk is that the keyboard is positioned slightly higher than usual. Which can make the keyboard flex a bit when pressed too hard, not a deal-breaker, but it takes some getting used to.
The lid can open up to 180°, which is a bonus. The trackpad? Absolute win. It's huge, smooth, and super responsive. What makes it stand out is gesture-based controls. You can now adjust volume, brightness, and media playback with simple swipes. Not something you see on most gaming laptops, and once you get used to it, it's hard to go back.
The transparent WASD and arrow keys with the blue accents, add a nice gaming touch. (Bilkul, swaad anusaar)
To put it simply: Lightweight, well-built, and designed for usability. No unnecessary gamer aesthetics, mostly functional design choices that make everyday use better.

SD Card Slot: A Missed Opportunity for Creators
While this is primarily a gaming laptop and features a microSD slot, the lack of an SD card slot for me personally, is something creators will notice. Almost all cameras use SD cards, and those which use the microSD cards come with an adapter in the box. If you're a gaming creator; someone who shoots content for Twitch or YouTube, you'll need a dongle. Would it have been nice to have an SD card reader? Absolutely. It wouldn't have taken up much space and would've made life way easier for creators on the go.

Speakers & Webcam: Good Enough?
The speakers are loud and mid-heavy, with crisp trebles, but if you're expecting deep, punchy bass; that's missing. The down-firing setup doesn't help either, since placing the laptop on a soft surface (like your bed or couch) just muffles the sound. If you're watching movies or using the laptop outdoors, headphones are a must. The speakers are decent but like always, I believe upward firing would've made it a lot better. The audio is tuned by Dirac but again, the real-life speaker's output is underwhelming. The Macbook Air 14" 2024 as a reference sounds much cleaner and louder.
The webcam is a 1080p setup, and it gets the job done, nothing groundbreaking, its fine for video calls and meetings. The privacy shutter is a nice touch, just slide it shut when you're not using it. No need for ugly stickers over the lens.

Software
The V16 runs on Windows 11 Home with Office 2024 pre-installed, plus a 1-year Microsoft 365 Basic subscription that gives you 100GB of cloud storage. It's handy if you're someone who likes to keep backups. The MyAsus app is also included, letting you tweak performance modes, fan speeds, and other settings to suit your workflow.

Battery Life
Gaming laptops aren't exactly known for marathon battery life, and the V16 is no exception. I got around 2.5-3 hours with Wi-Fi connected, switching between headphones & speakers at 100% and brightness maxed out, before reaching for the charger again.
The good news is the 150W Fast charger, but how fast? It clocked 100% in about 120 odd minutes, and if you're on the move, the 100W USB-C PD charging support means you can juice it up with a more compact charger. Definitely a nice plus if you're carrying it around all day.

Price & Variants
The Asus V16 comes in Intel Core 5 210H (16GB/512GB) price at ₹83,990 and Intel Core 7 240H (16GB/512GB) at ₹93,990. The Core i5 version, which is likely to be the more popular choice in the Indian gaming ecosystem. The Core i7 variant costs a bit more by default, but the i5 is no slouch either.
Verdict
The Asus V16 strikes a fine balance between power, portability, and practicality, making it an excellent choice for gamers who turned into professionals, those who want a minimalist yet capable machine. With strong thermals, a large trackpad with smart gestures, and a 1080p webcam with a privacy shutter, it checks a lot of the right boxes for a versatile gaming laptop. The fast charging and USB-C PD support add to its convenience factor.
However, hardcore esports players might miss an Ethernet port for ultra-low latency gaming, and creators may find the display's color accuracy limiting. While the speakers and mic are average, all of these are far from a dealbreaker, if versatility & portability is something that you're looking for.
If you're a student or a professional who wants a gaming laptop that can blend into a professional setup yet unleash power when needed, the Asus V16 is a strong contender.
