HP HyperX Omen 15 Review: Experience Performance Beyond The Specs

The HyperX OMEN 15 focuses on balance rather than flashy gaming aesthetics or brute-force specifications. It features a clean, understated design, a sturdy build, and a surprisingly comfortable keyboard that works equally well for gaming and productivity. The 15.3-inch 2.5K 180Hz display is one of the highlights, offering sharp visuals, smooth gameplay, and excellent brightness for daily use.

Performance is strong overall, especially once DLSS 4.5 and NVIDIA Multi-Frame Generation come into play. Modern games run smoothly at high frame rates, while cooling performance remains genuinely impressive for an HX-series Intel laptop. Even during extended gaming sessions, temperatures stay remarkably controlled without aggressive throttling.

The laptop does have a few drawbacks. Battery life is average, the touchpad feels inconsistent, and the pricing feels slightly high considering the RTX 5050 GPU. Still, the overall experience feels refined, stable, and better optimised than many competitors in the same category.

The HyperX OMEN 15 largely sticks to the design language gamers already associate with the older HP OMEN lineup, and that is not a bad thing at all. The laptop features a clean matte black finish with subtle styling that feels closer to a premium workstation than an overly aggressive gaming machine.

The refreshed HyperX logo on the lid and the small branding near the chassis give it just enough identity without making it look flashy. In many ways, the design feels inspired by the minimalist approach seen on Lenovo's Legion series, which should appeal to users who prefer understated gaming laptops.

At 2.36cm thick and weighing 2.21kg, the OMEN 15 sits comfortably within the expected range for a gaming laptop, but it surprisingly feels lighter in hand during daily commutes and casual movement around the house.

The polycarbonate chassis feels sturdy with very little flex around the keyboard deck or display, while the hinge mechanism remains stable during use, even though it only opens up to 145 degrees. The only real downside is the matte coating, which attracts fingerprints and smudges very quickly, making regular wiping almost unavoidable. 

The HyperX OMEN 15 offers a fairly straightforward selection of ports that covers the essentials, but not much beyond that. You get two USB Type-A ports, a USB Type-C port with DisplayPort and power delivery support, HDMI 2.1, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack.

The available ports are enough for a standard gaming setup, but the limited selection becomes noticeable once you start connecting several accessories at the same time. Users who regularly work with external monitors, storage devices, streaming gear, or wired peripherals may feel the need for additional connectivity options. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, both of which performed reliably during testing.

One of the highlights of the HyperX OMEN 15 is its keyboard, which offers a satisfying amount of key travel and a typing experience that feels genuinely comfortable for both gaming and everyday work. The keys feel tactile and responsive with every press, making long typing sessions surprisingly enjoyable. Whether it was writing articles, replying to emails, or jumping into fast-paced multiplayer games, the keyboard consistently felt reliable and easy to adapt to.

The keys were well spaced out to eliminate typing errors, and it didn't take me a lot of time to get used to them. The four-zone RGB lighting adds a nice touch without going overboard, and the OMEN Gaming Hub allows enough customisation to give the setup a bit of personality.

The touchpad, however, is less impressive. While it gets basic navigation done, the tracking occasionally feels inconsistent and clicks do not always register as smoothly as expected. It is perfectly usable for casual browsing or quick tasks, but for anything precise or extended, you will almost certainly want to plug in an external mouse. Thankfully, most gaming laptop users probably will anyway, so it never feels like a major drawback.

The HyperX OMEN 15 features a 15.3-inch 2.5K WQXGA IPS display that ends up being one of the strongest aspects of the laptop overall. The 2560 × 1600 resolution delivers noticeably sharper visuals compared to standard Full HD panels, whether you are gaming, editing photos, or simply browsing across multiple windows. The taller 16:10 aspect ratio also adds extra vertical space, which genuinely improves day-to-day usability.

For gaming, the 180Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time make a clear difference in fast-paced titles like Valorant or CS2, where smooth motion and quick responsiveness matter. VRR support also helps reduce screen tearing when frame rates fluctuate during heavier games. The panel reaches up to 500 nits of brightness, remaining comfortably visible in brightly lit rooms, while the anti-glare coating keeps reflections under control without hurting colour quality.

With 100% sRGB coverage, Eyesafe certification, and a screen-to-body ratio above 90%, the display feels immersive, vibrant, and easy to use for long sessions.

Moving on to performance, the HyperX OMEN 15 is equipped with an Intel Core i7-14650HX processor and an Nvidia RTX 5050 laptop GPU. For multitasking, there's 24GB of DDR5 RAM with transfer rates of 5600 MT/s. Additionally, there's another memory slot for RAM expansion. You also get 1TB of PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD storage and two expansion slots. Now, let's look at some real-world results.

CPU Benchmarks

To get a better understanding of how the Intel Core i7-14650HX performs beyond gaming, I ran a series of synthetic CPU benchmarks focused on both single-core responsiveness and sustained multi-core workloads. These tests help evaluate how well the laptop can handle heavier tasks like video editing, multitasking, rendering, and productivity workloads alongside gaming.

The HyperX OMEN 15 delivers strong and stable CPU performance across gaming and productivity workloads, maintaining smooth responsiveness and consistent multi-core output without noticeable throttling, thanks to its excellent thermal management.

To see how the HyperX OMEN 15 performs in real-world gaming scenarios, I tested a mix of competitive shooters and demanding AAA titles across different graphics settings. The results show how well the RTX 5050 laptop GPU handles modern games, especially when paired with NVIDIA technologies like DLSS and Frame Generation.

Forza Horizon 5 comfortably pushed around 170 FPS on high settings, while Marvel Rivals delivered over 100 FPS even on medium settings. Competitive shooters like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 also stayed smooth at roughly 135 FPS on low settings. More demanding titles such as Battlefield VI managed around 90 FPS on medium settings, while Doom: The Dark Ages hovered near 60 FPS natively before jumping all the way to 170 FPS with DLSS Frame Generation enabled.

Note: All the games here were tested at 1080p resolution rather than the laptop's native WQXGA resolution.

Overall, the HyperX OMEN 15 delivers stable and enjoyable gaming performance across both esports and AAA titles. While the RTX 5050 is not designed for maximum ray tracing performance, DLSS 4.5 and Frame Generation help the laptop maintain high frame rates and a consistently smooth gaming experience.

Battery life on the HyperX OMEN 15 is fairly standard for a performance-focused gaming laptop. With Eco Mode enabled, integrated graphics active, 50% brightness, and lighter workloads like web browsing and YouTube streaming, the laptop delivered roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours of usage during testing. It is enough for casual work away from the charger, but this is clearly a machine designed to stay plugged in for gaming sessions.

Charging speeds are thankfully quite good. The bundled 230W charger can push the battery to around 50% in roughly 30 minutes, while a full charge takes close to 1 hour and 40 minutes, which helps offset the average battery endurance.

Thermals

Cooling is easily one of the most impressive aspects of the HyperX OMEN 15. HX-series Intel processors are known for running extremely hot under sustained workloads, often requiring undervolting to keep temperatures under control. Surprisingly, that never felt necessary here. Even after around 2.5 hours of continuous gaming, CPU temperatures stayed below 75 degrees Celsius, only crossing the 85-degree mark after several hours of gaming.

The GPU remained even more stable, consistently staying under 70 degrees throughout testing. The thermal management here feels genuinely well-tuned, which should help with long-term reliability as well. HyperX also includes a dedicated fan cleaning mode that pushes air through the vents to clear dust buildup, reducing the need for frequent manual cleaning.

Audio

Audio performance is decent overall, even if the downward-firing stereo speakers are not particularly loud. The speakers deliver clear vocals and respectable channel separation, making them perfectly fine for casual gaming, movies, and YouTube sessions. HP's DTS Sound Unbound software also adds useful audio presets like Spatial and Spacious modes, which noticeably improve immersion when using headphones or external speakers during gaming and media playback.

Webcam

On the brighter side, the laptop includes a surprisingly capable 1080p IR webcam. The camera delivers sharp video quality and supports Windows face unlock, which adds convenience during daily use. Features like HDR auto switching, temporal noise reduction, and dual-array microphones also help improve video call quality in different lighting conditions.

At Rs 1,37,999, the HyperX OMEN 15 does feel slightly expensive on paper, especially when many RTX 5050 laptops sit closer to the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.2 lakh range, while entry-level RTX 5060 machines are now entering the sub-Rs 1.4 lakh segment. However, the overall experience here feels more refined than the raw specifications suggest. The laptop makes full use of its hardware with excellent cooling, stable gaming performance, a strong display, solid build quality, and a genuinely comfortable keyboard. In everyday use, it ends up feeling more polished and balanced than many similarly priced alternatives.

The HyperX OMEN 15 feels like a gaming laptop that focuses more on delivering a polished overall experience rather than simply chasing the highest specifications on paper. Yes, the RTX 5050 at this price point may initially raise questions, especially with RTX 5060 laptops slowly entering a similar segment. But once you actually spend time with the machine, the strengths become easier to appreciate.

The display is excellent, the keyboard is genuinely comfortable for long sessions, cooling performance is among the best in its class, and the laptop consistently manages to extract impressive real-world gaming performance from its hardware. Add to that the understated design, solid build quality, and reliable day-to-day usability, and the OMEN 15 ends up feeling far more refined than many competitors that may offer stronger specifications on paper.

It is not the absolute best value-for-money gaming laptop in terms of raw hardware alone, but it is one of the more balanced and thoughtfully tuned gaming laptops currently available in this segment.
