Here's Why GPS uses more Battery than any other Antenna or Sensor in a Smartphone
GPS (Global Positioning System) is available on most devices these days as it will track your location and help you in finding nearby places, navigation, etc.

However, GPS consumes a lot of the battery life of your phone or tablet as it is pretty expensive. The worst part with GPS that is a useful feature is it will not let the system enter the sleep mode. The smartphones lose their battery power largely while GPS is turned on as the device doesn't go into a sleep state.

It is a slow communication channel that communicates with three or four satellites for a duration of 50 bits per second. Notably, there is no specific time division as in the other means of communication requiring powering the antenna for a specific duration. The battery draining behavior of GPS is noticeable during the initial acquisition of the navigational message from the satellite. This includes the satellite's, ephemeris, almanac, and state. Acquiring from each satellite will take from 12 to 30 seconds, but it can range up to 12 minutes too. The worst thing about GPS as mentioned above is that your device will not be able to go to the sleep state for this duration. So, it might not enter a deep sleep even for the 12 minutes time frame at the maximum. The A-GPS or Assisted GPS technology will solve this specific issue partially. It is done by sending the navigational message to your device over Wi-Fi or cellular data network. This actually dwarves the 50bps bandwidth of the GPS satellites and the time spent in sending the navigational messages by powering the GPS antenna. It also reduces the chances of your phone from entering the deep sleep mode.
