Intially, the term Wi-Fi commercially used at least as early as August 1999, was coined by a brand-consulting firm called Interbrand Corporation.

Li-Fi

Now, the scientists from the University of Edinburgh in the UK have achieved another feat, known as Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) which could offer internet speeds 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.

As per scientists, Li-Fi achieved the speed of 224GB/second in the lab during test, which is equal tp downloading 18 HD movies in a blink.

How Li-Fi works?

The so-called Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transfer data, but the Li-Fi will use visible light which is also a part of electromagnetic spectrum. In fact, the spectrum of light is 10,000 times larger than radio waves, which allows user to transfer enormous amount of data in less time.

Moreover, using light we can transfer informations using thousands of data streams simultaneously, unlike Wi-Fi which uses one data stream.

Basically, the Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) works by flashing the LED lights on and off at incredibly fast speeds, sending data to a reciever in binary code. This flashes cannot be seen by naked eye.

Limitations of Li-Fi

This Li-Fi technology comes with some limitations, where the visible light cannot pass through solid objects such as walls, like radio waves. So if user move to another room, the Li-Fi connection will get disconnected.

Future

As per the scientist, the experiment using Li-Fi is giving promising results.

If the Li-Fi continues to perform with flying colors though, the idea of having any wired internet at home may soon become a distant memory.
