Acer Planning to Release an Intel chip based Smartphone by 4Q12
Global PC manufacturers Acer has not tasted much success in the smartphone market, when the company came up with handsets like CloudMobile, Liquid Gallant and Liquid Glow in the past. However, it seems Acer is now in plans to strengthen the smartphone business to challenge major players prevailing in the market. This can be said as reports are swirling around in the web space that the company is planning to launch an Intel chip based smartphone in the market very soon. According to The China Post,Acer will release the new smartphone by Q4 this year.
Peter Shieh, Vice President of Acer’s business division in Taiwan hinted about the release of a new model during the launch event of Acer S500 smartphone. He mentioned that the new model will be arriving with Acer’s cloud services pre-installed. However, he did not reveal any further details regarding the specifications of this new Intel chip based smartphone.
Reportedly, Acer has been continuously associating with leading hardware manufacturers for expanding its horizons. The launch of the new Intel chip based smartphone will re-affirm the strength of Acer’s relationship with Intel. This association will put pressure on competing firms like Qualcomm and Samsung who will feel the need to develop efficiently performing chips at a faster rate.
Last month as well, rumors circuted by a Digitimes report stated that Acer will be releasing six new models in the next year, which will target the various segments of the European, Asian and Chinese markets, claim Jim Wong, the company’s President.
According to a Digitimes report, “One of the six models will be a Windows Phone 8 device and the rest will run on Android platforms, with high-end models to be built with Qualcomm’s dual-core CPUs and entry-level models using chipset solutions from MediaTek.”
In Europe, Acer will push the smartphone sales through it established sales and marketing channels and it will also strengthen its cooperation with telecom carriers. For the emerging Asian markets, Acer will target Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and India. In China, Acer plans to boost the sales of the entry-level to mid-range segment, but will not venture into the ultra-low-price segment.
Recently, Acer unveiled a couple of smartphones ahead of the IFA 2012 expo – Liquid Gallant Solo and Liquid Gallant Duo. Both the smartphones have identical specifications, with the main difference between them is that the Solo is a single SIM handset while Duo is a dual SIM handset.
Acer Liquid Gallant Solo and Duo will sport 4.3 inch display, 5MP rear camera, 1GHz processor, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, Wi-Fi, 4GB internal memory, 1GB RAM and a micro SD card slot to support expandable memory. Further, both the smartphones run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.
Intel on the other hand is following up a different story. The company has been trying for a grand opening in the smartphone industry for a while now. The new smartphone being talked about in the report from Acer will also help Intel to establish a commendable position in the smartphone market.
