The Apple Special Event is finally over, also the tech world has precisely observed all the unique features of the recently launched iPhone 5. What comes after that is the comparison of the new phone with the other smartphone heavyweights present in the current market. And when it comes to comparison, what's unavoidable is one of the most popular mobile device unboxed this year – the Samsung Galaxy S3.

 

iPhone 5 with a more powerful A6 processor and a much-improved and taller 4-inch display will combat a fierce war with the Android King Galaxy S3. Hence, lets compare the vital statistics of each device and make out how the go head-to-head against each other.

 

Form Factor: iPhone 5 boasts a dimension of 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and weighs around 112 grams while Galaxy S3 carries a dimension of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and weighs in at 133 grams.

Display: iPhone 5 packs a larger 4 inch LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen display with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution and 326 ppi pixel density approximately.

On the other hand, Galaxy S3 houses a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 306 ppi pixel density approximately.

Processor: iPhone 5 is equipped with a new Apple A6 chipset while Galaxy S3 is equipped with the Exynos 4412 Quad chipset.

Operating System: This is the contradicting segment of the comparison as the iPhone 5 is based on the latest iOS 6 mobile OS and Galaxy S3 is based on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. However, it is to be noted that the latter is upgradeable to the latest iteration of the Google's OS – Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OS.

iOS 6, which was launched at the Apple event on September 12 alongside a slew of product announcements is said to have over 200 new features including Apple Maps, improved Siri, new Safari app, iCloud cloud storage, new Photostream app, PassBook app, deeper integration to Twitter and Facebook and more.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean a plethora of new features including Project Butter, which offers faster, smoother and responsive performance, on-screen navigation buttons, expandable and contractible Android notifications, resizable App Widgets functionality, high resolution contact photos, Android Beam app and more.

Camera: Both the smartphones have an 8MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. When it comes to front camera, Galaxy S3 has a better 1.9MP camera while iPhone 5 has a 1.3MP camera.

However, the iSight camera in iPhone 5 includes features like backside illumination, a hybrid IR filter, a five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture, spatial noise reduction, dynamic low-light mode and faster photo capture.

Further, the iSight camera is the first Apple camera technology to have Panorama mode, which will allow users to capture large horizontal panoramic images.

Storage: Both iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 come in three configurations – 16GB/32GB/64GB. Further, iPhone 5 has 1GB RAM and Galaxy S3 has 2GB RAM.

Moreover, Galaxy S3 has an external micro SD card slot for expandable memory capacity.

Connectivity: On the connectivity front, iPhone 5 has features like DC-HSDPA 42Mbps, HSDPA 21Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Plus Cellular, Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and micro USB 2.0.

In comparison, Galaxy S3 is packed with features such as HSDPA, HSUPA, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP and EDR, micro USB 2.0 and USB on the go.

Battery: As per Apple, iPhone 5 is loaded with a Li-Po battery offering 225 hours standby and 8 hours talk time while Galaxy S3 has a 2,100 mAh Li-ion battery, which offers 11.5 hours talk time and 790 hours standby.

Price: iPhone 5 will be priced at $199 (approx. Rs 11,000) for 16 GB, $299 (approx. Rs 16,500) for 32 GB and $399 (approx. Rs 22,000) for 64GB respectively while Galaxy S3 is priced at Rs. 36900 for 16GB and Rs. 38900 for 32GB respectively.

Verdict

Well, there a very minor however important choices and differences between the two phones. Already, Apple has omitted the NFC technology from iPhone 5 which is present in Galaxy S3, however that might not be one of the major deal-breaker for a majority of consumers.

S3 and iPhone 5, both offer a ridiculous amount of battery life to keep things ticking over, however, when it comes to apps, as recently announced by the company, the Apple App Store has crossed the 700,000 apps mark, hence, the Android users are short of choice in that department.

Consumers who want a decent amount of screen real-estate, Galaxy S3 would be the right choice over iPhone 5, but at the same time, the former does has to offer an additional block of bright, pixel-dense space to play with.

Further, iPhone 5 rear camera is better including the iSight technology that is loaded with several features while S3 has a better front camera for video calling. In the end, Galaxy S3 can be called more revolutionary than iPhone 5 as it came up with many pilot software features including NFC, wireless charging, S Beam and much more.
