Google surprised everyone on Wednesday, a day before the launch of Apple's new iPad lineup. The tech giant unveiled the new Nexus 6 - its new flagship smartphone designed and manufactured by Motorola. The device has a huge 5.96-inch screen and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Yes indeed, the Nexus 6 is a serious competitor to the Apple-made iPhone 6 Plus, a high-end phablet. Both devices caters to more-or-less similar consumers.

We've not yet had a chance to try out both devices for ourselves yet, so this comparison article is based on the current information available on respective manufacturer's website. We'll definitely update this comparison article when we get our hands on a new Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The new Nexus 6 is manufactured by Motorola - the brand behind the Moto X. Google worked with Motorola to give its Nexus-branded device an edge over competitors. That's why the new phone looks similar to the Motorola Moto X (2014). It has an aluminum frame and comes in two color options.

The iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, is the biggest handset Apple has ever made. The shiny phone is made out of aluminum. The phone will be made available in Gold, Silver and Grey colors.

For comparison sake, the Nexus 6 is thicker and heavier than the iPhone 6 Plus. It measures 10mm thick and weighs in 184g compared with the iPhone 6 Plus. The latter phone measures 7.1mm in terms of thickness and weighs in at 175g.

Both phones come with bigger screen sizes. The Google Nexus 6 houses an exceptionally large 5.96-inch display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440-pixels (493ppi).

The iPhone 6 Plus, meanwhile, boasts an impressive 1920x1080 pixel display (401ppi) that Apple has dubbed 'Retina HD'.

The Motorola-made Nexus 6 is a powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz and coupled with Adreno 420 graphics. So the Nexus 6 has a powerful processor under the hood. It also has a decent 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. Unfortunately you just can't expand the device's internal memory.

In comparison with the Nexus 6, the iPhone 6 Plus is fairly a capable device. With its custom-built, 64-bit A8 processor and M8 motion co-processor, one should expect stable performance. The iPhone 6 Plus also lacks a microSD slot for expanding internal memory but does offer 16GB, 64GB and 128GB options.

Both the Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have fast 802.11ac WiFi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS, in addition to 4G LTE.
Further, the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a fingerprint scanner, while the Nexus 6 doesn't have any such feature.

If you buy the Nexus 6, you'll get Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the box. The Lollipop is the latest version of Google's Android mobile OS. The UI is very simple and neat, and of course, highly customizable. The platform is high on customization, multi-platform integration and more.

The iOS 8, on the other hand, is visually similar to the iOS 7. The iOS 8 is sleeker, and much more responsive. Well the core difference between the two platforms is related to design.

In the imaging department, the Google Nexus 6 gets a 13MP rear-facing camera, alongside a 2MP front facing camera. The Nexus 6's lens has an aperture of f/2.0, the iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, has an aperture of f/2.2.

The Nexus 6's rear facing camera is capable enough to shoot 4K video. The iPhone 6 Plus is capable of recording up to 1080p video from the rear facing camera and 720p HD from the front. The iPhone 6 Plus can shoot slow motion videos as well (120fps). Both the Nexus 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus have Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) feature built-in.

Google has added a fast charging feature in the Nexus 6, which it claims will give you up to 6 hours of battery life after just 15 minutes of charging time. The phone is backed by a 3200mAh battery.

Apple, on the other hand, claims they have added a power efficient battery inside the iPhone 6 Plus. The phone has a 2915mAh battery.

As for the iPhone 6 Plus, it starts upwards of Rs. 61,000 and goes up to Rs. 80,000 for the 128GB version. Google hasn't yet launched the Nexus 6 in India. It is expected to be priced upwards of Rs. 45,000.

Google's latest flagship handset, the Nexus 6, is a monster device. It comes with a huge 2K display and is powered by a Snapdragon 805 CPU. But it can't outrank the iPhone 6 Plus in respect of design and build. The iPhone 6 Plus, meanwhile, offers a huge 5.5-inch screen. It even comes with improved camera with OIS feature built-in.Unfortunately, the iPhone 6 Plus is way expensive compared to the Nexus 6.
