ColorOS 7: Most Refined And Intuitive Android Skin For Smartphones
The latest version of the ColorOS has started rolling out to the recently launched Reno-series smartphones. Based on Android 10, the ColorOS 7 is built on an 'Infinite Design concept' to offer a "Smooth and Delightful" user experience. The new custom skin focuses on delivering consistent performance by keeping security and customizability at its centre.
We have updated our OPPO Reno 10x Zoom to the latest ColorOS 7. There are several changes and new features that make the ColorOS 7 the most refined and intuitive custom skin for Android smartphones. Let's find out more about the new ColorOS 7.
ColorOS 7 Design: Simple and lightweight Infinite Design Approach
The ColorOS 7 adopts a borderless visual approach to bring a lighter and smoother feel to the user experience. The user interface lets you focus more on the content displayed on the screen. The 'Infinite Design' approach simplifies the general operations to make swiping, tapping and scrolling more efficient than before. A big part in adding a sense of lightness to the overall UI goes to the newly added OPPO Sans font. It is by far the best default font we have come across on any Android smartphone.
The ColorOS 7 also heavily improves on the appearance of icons. The new icons follow dual-tone material design to look simpler and graceful. You can also customize how the icons appear on the screen by choosing the icon styles from Default, Rectangle and Pebble. You can even choose 'Custom' mode to further customize the look and feel of the icons.
Better Haptics For Better Screen Touch Response
A good haptic feedback system improves the user experience multifold. With ColorOS 7, the company has improved the haptics to give you a more real screen touch experience. The improved haptics on the ColorOS 7-backed devices work throughout the UI covering eight different features including keyboard, Calculator, Compass, on-off switches, screen-off gestures and more.
Intuitive Animations And New Sound Effects
The design team has also worked towards making the animations and transitions more fluid and responsive. The ColorOS 7 applies physics-based animations which make the basic UI interactions immersive and realistic. For instance, while uninstalling applications, the phone's animations trigger a sense of realism to make you feel that the phone is actually getting free from clutter. The ColorOS 7 weather widget is also aligned with the real-time weather. What you feel outside appears on your phone's display. Even the charging animation has been revamped to look better.
We simply loved the ColorOS 7's adaptive weather alarm feature. When enabled, the phone's newly added sound algorithm adds a layer of audio over regular alarm sound to wake you up with nature's soothing melodies. Besides, the toggle sounds, taps, clicks, slides, file deletion, calculator key touches, compass pointer and the notification sounds are also simplified and sound more pleasant to ears.
Ease Of Use
There's a sense of ease while using ColorOS 7-backed devices. Our Reno 10x Zoom unit's speed and fluidity has improved multifold after the massive update. The UI has been optimized for one-handed mode; including the graphic design of password unlock to facilitate comfortable one-handed operation. The company has refined the 'Smart Sidebar' functionality. You can now drag an application out of the sidebar to open it in split-screen mode.
Besides, you can also control the opacity of the 'Assistive Ball' and can even hide it on a full-screen application. The floating window feature has also been optimized to support more applications. The ColorOS 7 also brings a pause function for screen recording, which comes quite handy.
New Navigation Gestures And Screenshots Methods
The newly added gestures make it easy to navigate throughout the UI. You can swipe up from any corner of the bottom to go back, swipe up from the centre of the bottom to go to home screen and swipe up and hold to view recent task. We liked the fact that the ColorOS 7 lets you customize the swipe back position as per your convenience. You can choose to place the back button on the bottom or on left or right side of the screen.
The ColorOS also features an optimized 3-finger screenshot mode. You can simply swipe down with three fingers to quickly capture a screenshot, which can be directly shared with contacts by a swipe down on the preview. You can also capture screenshot of specific regions (first-of-its-kind) on the display. Simply perform a 3-finger swipe and stop with a long press to take a screenshot of the area swiped by the fingers.
ColorOS 7 Visual Enhancements
The ColorOS 7 also adds a system-wide 'Dark Mode' which looks visually appealing, reduces power consumption and also protects eyes while using the phone in absence of ambient lighting. The dark mode in the ColorOS 7 works throughout the UI and supports several third-party apps such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsaApp, Twitter, etc, The ColorOS 7 also brings a colour accessibility mode to improve user experience for visually impaired users.
New Wallpaper Additions
We loved the ColorOS 7's new set of live wallpapers, especially the Hawa Mahal live wallpaper which changes colors and animations with time and touch interactions. The all-black live wallpaper that shows color flares with finger touches is simply a piece of art. Besides, the ColorOS 7 also brings several static wallpapers which give a nice touch to your phone's homescreen.
ColorOS 7 Performance Boost
We thoroughly enjoyed gaming on the ColorOS 7 backed Reno 10X Zoom. The screen's touch response has improved multifold after the new update which makes gameplay a sheer delight. The display now feels more responsive and quick while performing certain actions in fast-paced action games. The company has worked on basics (CPU scheduling and Integrated Circuits) to improve the frequency of touch scans and to address unresponsiveness, lagging, and dropped frame rate issues.
The ColorOS 7 is smart enough to predict and detect heavy load on the phone's resources. The software quickly reallocates system resources to important processes in order to ensure zero performance slowdown effect on gameplay and multitasking performance.
To put things in context, the ColorOS 7 increases the FPS (Frame per Second) by 38% to keep the performance in check. We were surprised to see that the battery life remains good even after playing games on a stretch. Thanks to an effective resources scheduling strategy, you can stream videos on loop and games play for longer duration than before.
Moreover, with an optimized CPU scheduling mechanism, you can now launch games much faster in Game Space. The ColorOS 7 also allows you to reply with split screen feature (with auto replies), while you are in the middle of the gameplay.
ColorOS 7 Availability
The ColorOS 7 has already been rolled out for the Reno series and OPPO F11 series devices including- Reno 10x Zoom, Reno, F11, F11 Pro and F11 Pro Marvel's Avengers Limited Edition respectively. It will be made available to the OPPO Find X series, Reno 2F, Reno Z, R17, R17 Pro, RX17 Pro, Reno 2Z and A9 in the first quarter of 2020. How To Upgrade Your OPPO Device To ColorOS 7
Now when you are well aware about the features and performance aspects of the ColorOS 7, let's understand how you can upgrade your device to the latest software. If you own the OPPO Reno, Reno 10x Zoom, F11, F11 Pro or the F11 Pro Marvel's Avenger Edition device, you must have received a notification for the new software update. As it is a staged rollout, it is also possible that your device hasn't received the update notification by now.
In that case, simply go to 'About' section of the phone and check for 'Software Update'. Make sure your device is at least 80% charged and have at least 3GB of free storage to install and perform the update.
