India’s Smartphone Market Slows Down, But Apple Shines with Record iPhone 16 Shipments

The Indian smartphone market, long considered one of the fastest-growing tech sectors in the world, has hit a roadblock. According to the latest data from IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone shipments in India dropped by 5.5% year-over-year (YoY) during the first quarter of 2025.

This marks the second consecutive quarter of decline, signaling that consumer demand is cooling off after years of rapid growth. However, amid this slowdown, one brand has bucked the trend-Apple.

A Market Facing Headwinds

India's smartphone shipments for Q1 2025 totaled 32 million units, down from the same period last year. Several factors contributed to this dip, with weak consumer demand and excess inventory from late 2024 playing major roles. Retailers and brands, burdened with unsold stock, leaned heavily on discounts and price cuts to clear the shelves in the first two months of the year.

"Brands focused more on offering retail support and price drops on older models to clear inventory," said Aditya Rampal, Senior Market Analyst at IDC Asia Pacific. However, despite aggressive discounts, consumers remained hesitant to upgrade their devices. This reluctance is partly linked to rising costs and the fact that many buyers are holding onto their phones for longer periods than before.

The mass-budget segment (devices priced between $100 and $200), which has traditionally been the backbone of India's smartphone market, saw a steep 21.9% decline YoY. Its share of the market dropped from 48% to 40%, indicating that Indian consumers may be shifting away from budget models in favor of more premium devices.

Apple's Big Win with the iPhone 16

Amid this overall slump, Apple emerged as the biggest success story of the quarter. The company recorded a 23% YoY growth, the highest among the top five smartphone brands in India. It shipped a record three million units in Q1 2025, largely driven by the success of the iPhone 16.

The iPhone 16 accounted for 4% of all smartphone shipments in India during the quarter, making it the highest-selling model in the premium segment ($600-$800). This segment, which saw a 78.6% growth YoY, was led by Apple, with the iPhone 16 alone capturing 32% of the market.

For a market traditionally dominated by budget and mid-range options, Apple's success is a strong indicator of changing consumer preferences. Indian buyers are increasingly willing to spend more on premium devices, especially when it comes with the promise of longer software support, better build quality, and advanced features.

Premium Segment on the Rise

One of the standout observations from the IDC report is the growth in the premium and mid-premium segments. While budget devices struggled, smartphones priced between $400 and $600 saw a 74% growth, with market share rising from 3% to 6%. Both Apple and Samsung expanded their footprints in this segment, driven by models like the iPhone 13 and Galaxy A56.

This shift is also reflected in the Average Selling Price (ASP), which reached a record $274 in Q1 2025, growing by 4% YoY. The willingness of Indian consumers to invest in higher-end devices marks a change in buying behavior. Analysts suggest that better financing options, widespread availability of 5G, and brand loyalty are driving this shift.

5G is Taking Over

The report also highlighted the growing dominance of 5G-enabled smartphones. Nearly 88% of all smartphones shipped in Q1 2025 were 5G-compatible, up from 69% in the same quarter last year. Interestingly, even the low-end 5G segment (sub-$100) showed growth, capturing 7% of the market.

Flagship models like the iPhone 16, Xiaomi Redmi 14C, OPPO K12x/A3x, and Realme 14x were among the highest-shipped 5G models during this period. This rapid adoption of 5G hints at Indian consumers' eagerness to future-proof their devices, even if it means spending a little more upfront.

Offline Channels Gain Ground

While online sales took a hit-falling 21.1% YoY-offline channels grew by 10%. This shift reflects brands' strategies to reach deeper into smaller towns and cities, offering better channel margins and personalized support. Vivo led the offline segment, followed by OPPO and Samsung, while Samsung and Motorola topped the online charts.

The growing emphasis on offline expansion suggests that brands are recognizing the limitations of e-commerce in smaller markets, where trust and physical experience still matter.
