It's already turning out to be a good year for Motorola. The Lenovo-owned company has launched an array of devices among different price ranges this year and has managed to receive a positive feedback.

Motorola Moto M vs BlackBerry DTEK 50: Specs Compared

To end the year on a high note, continuing to ride the wave of success, the company has launched yet another smartphone named as the Motorola Moto M in China. It is priced at CNY 1,999 which roughly translates to Rs. 20,000.

Both the smartphones come with pretty interesting features. While one offers near stock Android experience, the other offers top notch security to your personal data on the smartphone which not many companies seem to have offer extensively as of now.

Let's take a look at how both these smartphones stack up against each other.

Until now, Motorola has reserved the full metal design to its premium smartphones. However, things appear to change with the Moto M. It's worth mentioning the fact that this is the first smartphone to don a full metal body design under Rs. 20,000 category. Additionally, the company has shifted the fingerprint scanner to the rear from the front which is a welcome design change.

The BlackBerry DTEK 50, on the other hand, has a pretty uninspiring design. The smartphone was not actually designed by the company itself instead, it took help of TCL, the same company behind the Alcatel brand smartphones. Having said that, the DTEK 50 is a pretty slim smartphone and sits well in the hand, thanks to its small footprint.

Full HD display is the norm

Full HD display is the norm

Motorola's latest offering has a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology to protect its screen from scratches.

The BlackBerry DTEK 50 has a 5.2-inch Full HD display, meaning the pixel density is higher in the smartphone (in comparison to the Moto M) which results in sharper and crisper output

In terms of hardware, both the smartphones lack one thing or the other in comparison to each other.

While the Moto M is powered by a Helio P15 chipset coupled with 4GB of RAM, at the heart of the BlackBerry's latest offering is a Snapdragon 617 SoC. However, with 3GB of RAM, the DTEK 50 falls slightly behind in terms of memory.

In terms of battery, the Moto M has a 3,050mAh battery whereas the DTEK 50 has a meagre 2,610mAh battery. Both the smartphones offer support for fast charging technology.

The Moto M offers support for 4G VoLTE which means you can use the Reliance Jio 4G SIM on the smartphone to enjoy the Jio "Welcome offer."

For the shutterbugs, Motorola's latest offering sports a 16MP primary camera along with dual-LED flash and phase detection autofocus. At the front is an 8MP for selfies. To recall, the camera on the Moto G (4th Gen) has surprised us with its ability to capture stunning images, so expect something similar from the Moto M.

On the other hand, the DTEK 50 has a 13MP rear camera along with an 8MP front camera which takes care of selfies.

What makes both the smartphones special and different

What makes both the smartphones special and different

The Moto M runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box and offers almost stock Android experience. It marks the beginning of the company's design shift in under Rs. 20,000 smartphone category.

Also, a few other changes like relocated fingerprint scanner, a Helio P15 chipset which is very unlike Moto (the company typically uses Snapdragon chipsets), the inclusion of Dolby Atmos sound, and of course, the water and dust proof feature are what make the device special.

On the other hand, the DTEK 50 is special in its own way. The company offers a different take with the smartphone. Instead of doing what most of the smartphone vendors are doing currently, the company has largely focussed on security aspects of the phone.

As a result, the device offers top notch security to the data on your smartphone with the help of a few preloaded apps like BBM, Password Keeper, DTEK, and BlackBerry Hub. In addition, the company promises to offer timely software updates for enhanced security.

Verdict

Verdict

It pretty much depends on your personal preferences now. If you are looking for a device which offers great security more than anything else, the BlackBerry DTEK 50 should be a good bargain otherwise the Moto M is what you should look at.

Having said that, the Lenovo's own Z2 Plus which was recently launched in India is also a good alternative. If you can further spend some extra cash, the OnePlus 3 is also a good option.
