Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini vs Nokia Lumia 620: Will You Choose A Jelly Bean Dessert or An Apollo Ride?
If you are scratching your head to buy a mid-range smartphone with pretty decent specifications in India, the time is drawing near for you to make a smart decision. Besides MWC 2013, wherein a plethora of smartphones and other gadgets will be uncovered, the Indian market is facing new launches almost on every passing day.
The latest is that South Korean tech giant Samsung has sent out media invites for a special event on February 14, 2013 in the country. Widespread possibilities are that the company will bring its highly expected smartphone in the market - Galaxy S3 Mini - which has still not made its way into the country after several months of its launch. It is to be noted that Galaxy S3 Mini is unofficially available for pre-order from online retailer site - Tradus.com for Rs 20,790.
When it comes to Nokia, on the sidelines of Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 release in January 2013, it was announced that Lumia 620, the cheapest Windows Phone 8 handset launched so far will be released in February in the desi market. Further, several media reports claimed that the handset is estimated to be priced at Rs 16,000 approximately.
Hence, in February, the consumers can expect smartphones based on the latest versions of rival platforms - Android and iOS - Galaxy S3 Mini and Lumia 620. While the specifications are known, their pricing and availability is yet to be confirmed by the manufacturers. Dimensions & Weight: Galaxy S3 Mini carries dimension of 121.55 x 63 x 9.85 mm and weighs around 111.5 grams, whereas the thicker and heftier Lumia 620 boasts a dimension of 115.4 x 61.1 x 11 mm and weighs in at 127 grams.
Display: When it comes to display, Galaxy S3 Mini sports a 4 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 800 x 400 pixel resolution. In comparison, Lumia 620 packs a 3.8 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution.
Processor: In this segment, Galaxy S3 Mini is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core processor, whereas, Lumia 620 is powered by a 1GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor offering long battery life, effective multi-tasking, smoother game play, stunning graphics and more 3D effects.
Operating System: Speaking of OS, S3 Mini runs on Google's latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS out of the box while Lumia 620 comes with Windows Phone 8 operating system. When it comes to software features, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has new features including Project Butter, expandable and contractible notifications, resizable app widgets, live wallpaper preview, high resolution contact photos, improved Android Beam and many more.
On the other hand, Windows Phone 8 has improved features like dynamic Live Tile Information, social network integration in the People hub, Skydrive and Office 365 documents synchronization, Facebook-events integrated calendar, visual voicemail, threaded email conversations support and many more.
Camera: On the camera optics front, both Galaxy S3 Mini and Lumia 620 have a 5MP rear camera and a VGA front camera for video calling.
Storage: Speaking of storage, S3 Mini comes in 8GB/16GB internal storage options and a micro SD card slot for expandable storage support. On the other hand, Lumia 620 has 8GB internal storage and a micro SD card slot for expandable memory support.
Connectivity: On the data connectivity front, both are packed with connectivity features including Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth, NFC and micro USB 2.0.
Battery: Galaxy S3 Mini is powered by a 1,500 mAh Li-ion battery of undisclosed battery life while Lumia 620 is loaded with a 1,300 mAh battery of undisclosed backup.
Price: While Samsung and Nokia have not officially released Galaxy S3 Mini and Lumia 620 in India. However, former is unofficially available for pre-order at Rs 20,790 and the latter is estimated to be priced at Rs 16,000 approximately.
Verdict
Both Galaxy S3 Mini and Lumia 620 are mid-range smartphones that come packed with impressive specifications and reasonable price points.Galaxy S3 Mini being the miniature variant of Galaxy S3 comes with exclusive software features including S Beam, S Voice, Direct Call, Smart Stay, Pop-up Play and more.
At the same time, Lumia 620 is packed with features including Nokia Drive, CityLens, Nokia Maps, MixRadio and more as the other Lumia smartphones. If the concern is on a better display and a light-weight handset, Galaxy S3 Mini should be a right option. On the other hand, if the concern is on a relatively less priced handset with different color options including Red, White, Black, Cyan and Yellow, Lumia 620 could be the good choice.
