Galaxy S4 vs HTC One vs Nexus 4 vs Optimus G Pro vs S3 vs Note 2: Who is the Benchmark King?

|

Benchmark testing is very essential for smartphones as it helps in assessing the performance of the handset against competition in several aspects including functionality and more. This information will determine how the smartphones will fare against products that are already available in the market. Obviously, it can be said that Benchmark is the best way to explore the performance of a handset.

With the Android smartphone market share increasing almost every quarter with 70.8% market share as of 4Q12, several companies are manufacturing Android based flagship handsets to compete with each other and grab the increasing market share towards them. On the same lines, there are six Android heavyweights in the market currently including Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Optimus G Pro, Nexus 4 and HTC One.

Well, of these smartphones, Galaxy S4 has already received the title of amazing performer surpassing all the other smartphones including iPhone 5 and BlackBerry Z10 in an earlier benchmark test, but, how about the comparison with Android smartphones?

That's what the folks at PhoneArena have tried their hands on with the six handsets mentioned above using benchmark apps including Quadrant Standard, AnTuTu, Vellamo, GMBenchmark 2.5, GMBenchmark 2.7 and new 3DMark.

Have a look at the gallery to know the results of the benchmark tests on Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Optimus G Pro, Nexus 4 and HTC One.

GLBenchmark 2.5: Egypt HD

In the popular Egypt HD onscreen tests, Nexus 4, Galaxy S4 and HTC One fared well with acceptable scores. Of the trio, Nexus 4 with a 720p display and Snapdragon S4 Pro processor achieved the highest score of 44fps, while 1080p display equipped Galaxy S4 with Snapdragon 600 chipset has scores an average frame rate of 40 fps. HTC One, which has an increased pixel density of 467 ppi has scored only 32fps, which is too low compared to its rivals.

GLBenchmark 2.7: T-Rex HD

Again, on the T-Rex HD onscreen test, a similar situation was observed with Nexus 4 on the lead a score of 20fps, Galaxy S4 on the second position 15fps and HTC one with a score of 13fps. It is also to be noted that Optimus G Pro running on Snapdragon 600 CPU and boasting a 1080p display has fetched a score of 12fps, which is not too far as compared to that of its competitors.

Quadrant Standard

Quadrant score is one of the most popular benchmark applications and Galaxy S4 seems to be rocking in this scoring marginally more than HTC One. Also, Optimus G Pro has managed to score slightly lesser than 12000, the score of HTC One. The other handsets including Galaxy S3 and Nexus 4 are far less than Galaxy Note 2, which is also less at around 7000.

AnTuTu

Another popular benchmark test - AnTuTu shows that HTC One and Galaxy S4 are leaders with 12529 and 23391 respectively. The Optimus G Pro is in the third position scoring slightly lesser than 20000 and close to the other handsets including Galaxy S3, Note 2 and Nexus 4.

Vellamo

Vellamo tests the HTML5 capabilities of the smartphones, and Optimus G Pro has occupied the top spot with HTC One marginally behind it. Galaxy S4 has managed to occupy the third place followed by Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and Nexus 4.

When it comes to the metal part of Vellamo, HTC One with a metallic hardware grabs the first position.

3DMark: Ice Storm Extreme

3D Mark is a popular PC benchmark software and is new to smartphones. The app does not support Galaxy S4 and it is not too accurate in terms of Galaxy S3 as well. Hence, the other handsets - HTC One, Nexus 4, Galaxy Note 2 and Optimus G Pro were used in three tests - Ice Storm Extreme, Graphics Test and Physics Test.

Nexus 4 scores more in the Ice Storm Extreme test with its 720p display and decent hardware and HTC One comes in next. Even in the graphics test, the Nexus 4 and HTC One dominated the rest. But, in the physics test, Galaxy Note 2 from nowhere came into the lead with Nexus 4.

Verdict

On the whole, Galaxy S4 is in the top position being the fastest smartphone presumably. Also, HTC One its immediate rival has sometimes surpassed the Galaxy S4, but In few occasions. Then comes the Optimus G Pro wit its good looks, but it lacks software optimization making it inferior, anyways, it could manage in the Vellamo test for HTML 5.

Coming to the handsets there were launched in 2012, Nexus 4 is a good one, though it lacks the attractive looks of 1080p smartphones that are launched recently. Moreover, Nexus 4 is capable of offering a smooth overall performance, which is a good one.

The Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3, the hottest selling phablet and smartphone of 2012 are quite slow when compared to the rivals and hence, they are considered older hardware.
