Galaxy S4: Stunning 4.99 Inch Display Spotted At CES 2013 Triggers Rumors Of Upcoming Handset
At the CES 2013, Samsung dislayed its roadmap for the year suggesting a full HD 1080p 4.99 inch smartphone display set to launch in Q1 2013. With the anticipation about Samsung's highly rumored Galaxy S4 being on rise, reports have started claiming that this new display might makes it way on the handset.
As the smartphone battle heats up into 2013, this would make Samsung's latest handset's screen up to par with the stunning 1080p displays incorporated in HTC Butterfly, Sony Xperia Z, Huawei Ascend D2 and other handsets that are in the pipeline.
According to a report by AnandTech, the new 4.99 inch display packs a resolution of 1080p and a pixel density of 440 ppi. Also, Samsung is making use of a new material on the AMOLED display that will reportedly save up to 25% of the power consumption. The report also hinted that the display boasts a low power mode that can save the energy by about 47%.
In addition to the size and resolution, the launch date of Q1 2013 is an exciting news. Back in November 2012, a report in a Korean newspaper claimed the firm would be bringing a 4.99-inch 1080p screen to CES 2013. The report claimed that in this timeframe the display will enter into production.
While there is no confirmation on the presence of the display on the next generation Galaxy S smartphone, the current one - Galaxy S3 sports a Super AMOLED display with a slightly smaller 4.8 inch display with full HD 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. Hence, this new mysterious display spotted at the CES 2013 Samsung booth could be a significant upgrade with 440 ppi pixel density as compared to the 306 ppi screen in S3.
Moreover, a Samsung official has confirmed that Galaxy S4 will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 scheduled to happen in February this year in Barcelona. Contradictorily, on the official Samsung Lebanon Facebook page, it was quoted that Galaxy S4 will not make its way until May 2013.
Additionally, Samsung showed off two smartphone concepts that have curved displays at the right side and bottom. The curved portion of the screen offers quick information and notifications. Though this is an interesting concept, it is not likely to see smartphones with such displays anytime sooner into the market.
