There have been some pretty big and important announcements that have already been made at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) event from big names such as Samsung, Nokia and Sony. However, it's not only the big names that have captured the minds of people, but a few smaller ones as well that have also come forward with whatever they have to offer.

And among a number of such companies, one such manufacturer is the China-based Gionee which recently showcased its newest offering in front of the world, dubbed Gionee Elife S5.5. Apparently, going by the claims made by Gionee, the Elife S5.5 is the slimmest smartphone in the world.

With just 5.55 mm of thickness, the Gionee Elife S5.5, announced back in February 20 in China, is said to have been "developed through Gionee's deep understanding of customers' desire for a slim and powerful smartphone to also act as a fashionable accessory."

"We believe smartphones are both consumer electronics products and decorative artworks. A new approach with a focus in design is needed. We explored the design aesthetic of the smartphone from the standpoint of the fashion origins, emphasizing smartphones as a stylish identity for end users," said William Lu, President of Gionee.
