The evolution of technology has occurred in steps, and in each step it has opened up new areas or channels that have pointed toward further innovation. And while that innovation has driven a host of companies to utilize it in a number of ways possible, none has achieved the wanted results as that of Google.

Now the company is back in news again with a recent announcement that Google has built a prototype smartphone powered by Android that can learn and map the world around it. As revealed, the device comes via a new initiative called Project Tango.

Google says that the new Project Tango initiative and the smartphones running it have already been developed and that Google is ready to push the phone to developers to see what the new technology is capable of.

"The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion," the official page for the same states. "Now, we're ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help bring those ideas into reality."

The company says that the current prototype is a 5-inch phone that contains customized hardware and software that have been specially designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, "while simultaneously creating a map of the environment."

Apparently, these sensors will allow the phone to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around the user.

Obviously, the device runs on Android and also includes development APIs to provide position, orientation, and depth data to standard Android applications written in Java, C/C++, as well as the Unity Game Engine.

However, the company also states that these "early prototypes, algorithms, and APIs are still in active development," and so, "these experimental devices are intended only for the adventurous and are not a final shipping product."
