HTC One X+ vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Challenger vs Champion

HTC has added another product to its Android smartphone lineup with the uncovering of the One X+ - the successor of its flagship smartphone One X, which was unveiled during the Mobile World Congress 2012 held in February.

One X+ being a refreshed version of the One X, has more advanced features and specifications such as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS out of the box. As claimed by the Taiwanese handset maker, the handset will be available in Europe and North Asia by the end of this month.

As it is a revamped and upgraded version of the One X, the One X+ has four major improvements such as faster processor, increased internal storage capacity, bigger battery and 4G support.

With that being said, can the upcoming Android 4.1 Jelly Bean based handset outsmart the other Android heavyweights in the market including the Galaxy S3, which is gradually receiving the Jelly Bean OS roll out.

Speaking about the Galaxy S3, the flagship smartphone of the South Korean tech giant released in May 2012, the handset is quite successful achieving a scoring sales of 20 million in 100 days of its release.

Also, the handset, which was initially priced at Rs 43,180 has experienced a couple of price cuts and is available at Rs 34,800.

Dimensions & Weight: HTC One X+ boasts a dimension of 134.36 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm and weighs in at 135 grams while Galaxy S3 carries a dimension of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and weighs around 133 grams.

Display: When it comes to display, One X+ packs a 4.7 inch Super LCD 2 capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 312 ppi pixel density approximately.

On the other hand, Galaxy S3 houses a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 306 ppi pixel density approximately.

Further, both the handsets have the Corning Gorilla Glass 2 display protection.

Processor: In this segment, One X+ is powered by a quad core 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 AP37 processor and Galaxy S3 is equipped with the Exynos 4412 Quad chipset.

Operating System: When it comes to the OS, One X+ is based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS out of the box while Galaxy S3 is based on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. However, it is to be noted that the latter is upgradeable to the latest iteration of the Google’s OS – Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OS.

Speaking of the features of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the platform is packed with a plethora of new features including Project Butter, which offers faster, smoother and responsive performance, on-screen navigation buttons, expandable and contractible Android notifications, resizable App Widgets functionality, high resolution contact photos, Android Beam app and more.

Camera: Both the smartphones have an 8MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. When it comes to front camera, Galaxy S3 has a better 1.9MP camera while One X+ has a 1.6MP front camera for video calling purposes.

Storage:On the storage front, One X+ has 64GB internal storage accompanied with 1GB RAM.

On the other hand, Galaxy S3 comes in three variants – 16GB/32GB/64GB internal storage each with 2GB RAM.

Moreover, Galaxy S3 has an external micro SD card slot for expandable memory capacity.

Connectivity: On the connectivity front, One X+ offers Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP, HSDPA and HSUPA networks speeds, NFC and 4G LTE.

In comparison, Galaxy S3 is packed with features such as HSDPA, HSUPA, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP and EDR, micro USB 2.0 and USB on the go.

Battery: One X+ is loaded with a 2,100 mAh Li-Po battery delivering 6 hours of talk time while Galaxy S3 has a 2,100 mAh Li-ion battery, which offers 11.5 hours talk time and 790 hours standby.

Verdict

Both the Android heavyweights – HTC One X+ and Samsung Galaxy S3 are advanced smartphones with high-end specifications.

The major difference between the two is in the operating system segment as the HTC offering is based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS while the Galaxy S3 is still awaiting its Jelly Bean upgrade.

The Taiwanese manufacturer is slated to release the handset in the global markets starting this month while Samsung's Galaxy S3 has already referred to as the King of Android smartphones as it has created a record in the sales beating the iPhone 4S in the US market. 

As the HTC One X+ is yet to the released, expert feedback is still awaited on the performance of the smartphone in order to access if it can outsmart the champion – Galaxy S3.
