Huawei Ascend W2: Will the Upcoming WP8 Handset Knock out Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X?

With the release of Windows Phone 8 OS and launch of the first wave of smartphones based on the platform, now, tech gossipers across the world have started talking about the next set of handsets that will run on the latest incarnation of Microsoft’s mobile OS.

Earlier, there were reports that the Chinese handset vendor – Huawei is planning to launch two Windows Phone 8 smartphones – Ascend W1 and Ascend W2 during the Consumer Electronics Show 2013 in January. Of the two smartphones  one is expected to be an affordable device and the other would reportedly be a high end device.

Moreover, several reports from numerous sources hint that the affordable Ascend W1 will have a 4 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 5MP rear camera with LED flash, VGA front-facing camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal memory, micro SD card support and 2,000 mAh battery. Also, it would be the cheapest WP8 smartphone launched so far with a price tag of $310 (approx. Rs 17,000).

Now, a recent Unwired View report, the Chinese website Winp.cn has revealed some photos of Ascend W2 – the high end Huawei Windows Phone 8 handset. The report claims that this handset could be the flagship WP8 smartphone of Huawei.

There is nothing much known about the handset, but it is clear that it has an 8MP rear camera along with dual LED flash. The report also assumes that the handset could sport a high definition display and a dual core processor unit.

Will Ascend W2 knock out Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X?

Going by the lines of the report, the high-end Windows Phone 8 offering – Ascend W2 will reportedly have a HD display, dual core processor and 8MP rear camera.

Hence, Ascend W2 could be a competitor to the already existing high end models – Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X that are also based on Windows Phone 8.

Coming to the specs, Lumia 920 packs a 4.5 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels along with PureMotion HD and ClearBlack display technologies. The handset is equipped with an 8.7MP rear camera with PureView branding, 1.2MP front camera, 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB internal memory, NFC connectivity and 2,000 mAh Li-ion battery.

HTC 8X includes a 4.3-inch Super LCD 2 display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera, 16GB internal memory, 512MB RAM, microSD card slot for memory expansion up to 32GB, 1,800 mAh Li-Po battery, Beats Audio integration, NFC, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi features.

Hence, Huawei has the chance to knock off the WP8 offerings from HTC and Nokia provided its upcoming smartphone is expected to come with a 1080p display and also match them as far as the other undisclosed specs are concerned.
