The Indian handset market is mainly dominated by low-priced feature phones. While the affordable smartphone market is increasing at a rapid pace, users still find Rs. 5,000 priced handset an expensive option. Therefore, there is an urgent need to launch feature rich smartphones under Rs 2000 price bracket.
Earlier in the week, Firefox announced its partnership with industry's two heavy weight handset makers, namely, Intex and Spice, to launch low-cost phones under Rs. 2,000. While Spice has already revealed its plans to launch its first Firefox phone in July, and now Intex has also listed out some specifications of its first Firefox OS smartphone.
Intex on Thursday said its first ever Firefox phone, the Intex Cloud FX, would be priced under Rs. 2000 when it launches in August this year. The company further said that the new phone would come with a 3.5-inch display, a 2-megapixel rear camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and dual SIM support.
The handset could be similar to the reference $25 Firefox OS smartphone platform unveiled by Mozilla and Spreadtrum at this year's MWC tech show in February.
"Intex association with Mozilla Firefox is a step towards our brand's promise to offer quality products to our consumers to improve their lives and set industry benchmarks. Intex Cloud FX is aimed at fulfilling the idea of - 'Smartphone for all' which will be priced below Rs. 2,000. This smartphones will be equipped with enhanced phone and browser features of Firefox OS with an access to a rich ecosystem of latest web applications improving users overall smartphone experience at affordable prices", said Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, Business Head of the Mobile vertical.
