It all started on January 8, when with the advent of CES 2013 in Las Vegas, India based mobile handset vendor Lava Mobile started teasing the visitors on its official Facebook page about the company's upcoming smartphone, which they quoted as "Your mobile experience is about to change with bigvantage."
Moving on came yesterday, when Lava Mobiles commenced the countdown of the launch of their next best device, and finally today, that is January 11, the company has officially announced their first step into the Indian phablet market segment with the launch of their 5 inch handset - Lava Iris 501 - the company's first phablet with dual SIM support running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.
Above all the most attractive aspect of the newly launched handset is the pricing, as confirmed by the Lava spokesperson, Iris 501 will be available in the market at a price of around Rs 9,999. Well, this definitely seems to be quite a decent market price range as compared to other dual core phablets present in India right now, which generally fall in the sub Rs 12,000 range. Hence, lets take a detailed look at the specifications and key features of the Lava Iris 501, to analyze how the new device will stack against the other competitors in the market.
When it comes to the specifications of Lava Iris 501, the handset comes with standard specs as listed below.
Dimensions & Weight: While the weight of the handset remains unknown, it measures 148.5 x 79 x 10.5 mm in dimension.
Display: Iris 501 houses a 5 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.
Processor: The handset is equipped with a 1GHz dual core processor for better multitasking and improved overall performance.
OS: As the other budget phablets, the Lava offering also comes with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
Camera: The handset sports a 5MP rear camera and a 0.3MP front camera for video calling.
Storage: Iris 501 has 4GB internal storage and a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB expandable storage support.
Connectivity: In terms of connectivity, Iris 501 comes packed with features including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and micro USB 2.0.
Battery: Thehandset is loaded with a 2,300 mAh Li-Po battery of undisclosed backup.
Price: As of now, there is no word regarding the price of Iris 501, but, it could be priced in the sub Rs 12,000 as per tech experts' estimation.
Lava Iris 501 also comes with special built in apps like Hike; for free messaging, Saavn Music player app, Fusion Music organizer app and games from Gameloft like Asphalt HD.
Lava is offering a free 4GB memory card and an additional back cover with every purchase of Iris 501.
Potential Phablet Rivals in India
Analyzing the specifications of Iris 501, it is quite clear that it will be a stiff competitor to all the budget phablet offerings available in the market including Micromax A110 Canvas 2, Intex Aqua 5.0, Magicon mNote and Zync Cloud Z5.
Similar to the other phablets, Iris 501 also comes with a dual core 1GHz processor, Android ICS, 5 inch display, 5MP camera, VGA front camera, expandable memory option and a standard battery.
Moreover, with freebies including back cover and memory card, Lava Iris 501 could be an attractive offering for many.
