In 2012, almost all the India based handset vendors including Micromax were quite busy in launching a spree of handsets into the market at different price points.
Micromax, who recently launched a phablet - A116 Canvas HD is now in the headlines for its entry-level handset - A54 Smarty 3.5. The handset has been spotted on online retailer site Infibeam.com at a price of Rs 4,659. After launching a high-end quad core Android Jelly Bean device, Micromax has come up with a dual SIM Gingerbread based smartphone.
When it comes to specifications, A54 smarty 3.5houses a 3.5 inch HVGA touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7225AA processor, 512MB internal storage, 256MB RAM, micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB additional storage, Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS, 3MP rear camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 1,300 mAh Li-ion battery delivering 4 hours talk time and 170 hours of standby.
From the specs, it can be said that Micromax has targeted the first time smartphone users with the Smart 3.5.
Though it might look too outdated to have a Gingerbread smartphone, Micromax is not the only company to come up with such offerings in India. Almost all the main native manufacturers including Karbonn, Intex, Spice, Lava and several others are also launching such entry-level smartphones at budget price points. Not only local vendors, but also Samsung - the world's largest smartphone manufacturer has also launched a plethora of such handsets.
As Micromax is constantly pushing in a lot of models into the smartphone segment of the country, it is clear that the company is aiming to secure the position of a leading handset vendor in India. However, the latest offering - A54 smarty 3.5has several prominent competitors in the market.

Lava Iris N350
Lava is Iris N350, which is priced at Rs 4,499 in India. When it comes to specs, Iris N350 features a standard 3.5 inch screen display size supporting an average resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, Android 2.3.6, 1GHz processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2MP rear camera, 0.3MP front camera for video calling and a 1,300 mAh battery.
With a front camera for video calling and similar specifications as the Micromax offering, the Lava smartphone could be a potential rival to the latter.
Intex Aqua Trendy
Intex launched Aqua Trendy, a Gingerbread based smartphone featuring a 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, 1GHz dual core processor, 3.2MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB additional storage, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 2,100 mAh battery.
Priced at Rs 4,999, Aqua Trendy has a similar specifications as the Micromax offering and comes with a front camera and improved battery backup. Hence, it can be said that the Intex smartphone is a hard hitting challenger to the same.
Spice Stellar Mi-352
Spice has also made a smartphone available online dubbed as Mi-352, which houses a 3.5 inch TFT LCD touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7225AB processor, 512MB internal storage, 256MB RAM, micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB additional storage, Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, 2MP rear camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 1,300 mAh Li-ion battery delivering 3.5 hours talk time and 9 days of standby.
Priced at Rs 4,634, the Spice handset with similar specifications as A54 smarty 3.5could be a tough challenger for the latter.
As far as specifications are concerned, A5+ sports a 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, 1GHz single core processor, micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB expandable memory, Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread OS, 3.5MP rear camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, and 1,420 mAh Li-ion battery.
Priced at Rs 4,899, the Karbonn offering could be a stiff competitor to the Micromax offering with a similar price tag and specifications.
Newly launched Byond B51 houses a 3.5 inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen display with 320 x 480 pixel resolution, 1GHz processor, Android 2.3,6 Gingerbread operating system, 3MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera for video calling, 256MB RAM, micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB additional storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 1,500 mAh battery of undisclosed backup.
Priced at Rs 4,999, Byond B51 with almost similar specifications as the Micromax smartphone will definitely pose a threat to the it.
