At Rs. 5,299 the Lumia 430 has plenty of competition from budget Android smartphones from the likes of Motorola and Gionee.

At first glance, the Lumia 430 looks like the 435 in terms of design. Available in a plethora of fruity colours, the Lumia 430 has a subtly polycarbonate body, like any other Microsoft-made handset.

The Lumia 430 measures 10.63mm, and weighs 127.9 grams. Sure, it's light and comfortable to hold. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top and a microUSB port at the bottom. On the right are the usual power and volume rocker buttons.

The bad news is that there is no LED Flash alongside the back facing camera. Anyway, if we had to decide based on design, the Lumia 430 is a clear winner.

Like the Lumia 435, this phone too has a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The display is, of course, poor in 2015. Well, you probably won't mind a 4-inch low resolution display.

The core issue is that the screen isn't super crisp in outdoor settings. Overall it isn't as bright and colourful, but it's just a passable screen. We're expecting the successor to the Lumia 430 might pack at least 900 x540 display panel.

Windows Phone 8.1 is a fluid software when compared to Google's Android mobile OS. The software features themselves did manage to impress us, though.

Being a Windows-powered device, it's quite natural to expect Microsoft's core applications come pre-loaded (yes, these apps are absolutely free) on the handset such as MS Office, Skype and OneDrive. We appreciate the company's strategy to promote software and service over any other gimmicky feature.

Of course, we're yet to test Microsoft's native applications and software - but on first impression - the latest version of Windows Phone is definitely its best yet.

For starters, it comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 200 running at 1.2GHz. And it's backed by 1GB of RAM. Although it's not the fastest chip that many were expecting, potential buyers needn't worry about performance. Loading our website was fast, as was streaming Youtube videos. We're yet to do a speed test, but we'll be sure to do so in our full review.

There's 8GB of storage, but you can insert a microSD card to expand the 430's capacity by up to 128GB. Unfortunately, there's no support for 4G (blame: Qualcomm), just 3G.

One of the camera front, you'll find a 2MP (fixed focus) rear-facing, and a 0.3MP front-facing shooter. We had a quick play with the camera, which proved rather disgusting experience, even in indoor settings.

Photos aren't great; they're grainy and full of noise. The handset can shoot a video (480 x 848), though, the quality was rather poor.

The handset is backed by a 1500mAh replaceable battery. Given the phone is an entry-level device, we're expecting the battery to last at least a day.
