After Redmi K60 Ultra, Xiaomi Confirms 4 Major Android OS Updates And 5 Years Security Patches For Xiaomi 13T

Xiaomi is gradually realigning its smartphone support strategy and matching a few leading brands such as Google, Samsung, and OnePlus. After confirming long-term OS and security updates for the Redmi K60 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi will extend the same support for the upcoming Xiaomi 13T series smartphones.

The upcoming Xiaomi 13T series smartphones should include the base model Xiaomi 13T and the top-end Xiaomi 13T Pro. These smartphones will get four major Android OS updates and five years of security patches.

Xiaomi 13T To Get 4 Major Android OS Updates And 5 Years Security

Xiaomi 13T Update Cycle Confirmed

Lei Jun, Founder and CEO of Xiaomi confirmed this week the company will launch the eagerly-awaited Xiaomi 13T series outside China on September 26, 2023. The launch will take place in Berlin, Germany.

Xiaomi should release two devices, the Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro at the launch event in Berlin. Both devices will feature a Leica-powered camera setup. Just ahead of the launch, Xiaomi has assured long-term software support for these two flagship-grade Android smartphones.

Daniel Desjarlais, the Communications Director of Xiaomi, posted on X (Twitter) that the Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro will receive 4 major Android OS updates as well as 5 years of security patches.

Xiaomi should launch both the Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro with MIUI 14 OS, which is based on Android 13. With the committed long-term support, the Xiaomi 13T series smartphones should get Android OS updates up to Android 17, which should be released in 2027.

Apart from getting the Android 17 OS update, the Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro get security patches up to 2028. Xiaomi recently confirmed it will offer four major Android OS updates and security updates for five years for the Redmi K60 Ultra.

Will Xiaomi Assure Long-Term OS And Security Updates For Its Other Smartphones?

With the recent announcements, Xiaomi has become the third brand after Samsung and Google to provide updates for up to 5 years. However, commitments from these leading smartphone manufacturers don't cover all their smartphones.

Similarly, Xiaomi is clearly offering such extended software support only to its premium Android smartphones with flagship specifications that command a hefty price. It is doubtful if Xiaomi will extend such long-term software update commitments to other smartphones under the Xiaomi and Redmi brands.

Xiaomi could be trying to push sales via such announcements. However, from the customer's perspective, it would be very helpful if the brand included more of its smartphones in this long-term software support cycle.
