Apple Bolsters Security With New Anti-Theft Password Protection Feature With iOS 17.3 Beta
In a bid to enhance iPhone security, Apple has introduced robust security settings with the iOS 17.3 developer beta. The update aims to thwart potential threats, specifically focusing on preventing thieves from gaining unauthorized access to user information and accounts.
Biometric Authentication Mandate
The notable enhancement includes a mandatory biometric authentication requirement-Face ID or Touch ID-before executing sensitive actions. Users can enable the new Stolen Device Protection setting through Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection in iOS 17.3 beta. This setting ensures that accessing critical features, like iCloud keychain passwords or performing transactions in Apple Cash, requires biometric verification.

Actions Covered by Biometric Authentication
Once activated, this setting safeguards various actions, including accessing iCloud keychain passwords, turning off lost mode, sending money from Apple Cash to a bank account, erasing device content and settings, and setting up a new device. Additionally, specific actions come with an added layer of security-a delay after biometric authentication, such as changing the Apple ID password or disabling Find My iPhone.
Addressing Previous Security Concerns
This development follows reports from earlier this year, where thieves exploited vulnerabilities in Apple's software. The Wall Street Journal highlighted instances where thieves observed individuals entering passcodes at bars and quickly changed users' passwords, gaining access to iCloud and payment accounts.
Apple's Response to Evolving Threats
In response to evolving threats, Apple emphasized its commitment to user data protection. The company stated that the Stolen Device Protection feature adds a sophisticated layer of defense in situations where a thief might observe and steal a device. The new security measures aim to thwart unauthorized access, even if a passcode is compromised.
Availability and Final Release
As of now, the Stolen Device Protection feature is available to users testing the developer version. The final version, expected in the coming weeks, will be accessible to all users upon the official release of iOS 17.3.
