Apple Doubles Battery Lifespan of iPhone 15 Series with the Latest iOS Update

Apple has recently announced a significant update regarding the battery lifespan of its iPhone 15 series, including the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The tech giant revealed on Tuesday that these devices are now capable of retaining 80 percent of their original charging capacity after 1,000 cycles, a figure that notably doubles the company's prior estimates. This enhancement arrives without the introduction of new hardware or software modifications.

Aligning with Upcoming EU Regulations

This announcement comes at a strategic time as the European Union prepares to implement new regulations in June 2025, which will assign an energy grade from A to G to smartphones and tablets based on various criteria, including battery longevity.

Devices will need to demonstrate the ability to retain at least 80 percent of their original capacity after a minimum of 800 charging cycles to meet the battery longevity criterion. Apple's recent findings that its latest iPhone models exceed this requirement could position the company favorably under these new EU standards.

Testing and Recommendations

Apple elaborated that the improved battery lifespan estimate was achieved through rigorous testing involving a thousand charge and discharge cycles under specific conditions, along with a series of tests that simulate common usage scenarios.

The company credited ongoing enhancements to its battery components and iOS power management system for this advancement. However, for iPhones released before 2023, the original estimate of maintaining 80 percent capacity after 500 cycles remains applicable, with Apple indicating that it might review and update these estimates if necessary.

Maximizing iPhone Battery Longevity

For users aiming to maximize their iPhone's battery longevity, Apple suggests maintaining the device within a temperature range of 62 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit and advises against charging or storing the phone in environments hotter than 95 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent overheating.

Additionally, for those storing an iPhone for an extended period, the company recommends leaving the device half-charged.

Latest iOS Update

In a related development, Apple plans to make it easier for iPhone users to monitor their device's battery health. Starting with iOS 17.4, currently in beta, the battery cycle count will be relocated from the "Settings > General > About" section to a more intuitive location within the "Battery Health" settings.

This move aims to improve user access to essential battery metrics, following the feature's introduction in iOS 17 last fall. As Apple prepares to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape in the European Union, these updates underline the company's commitment to enhancing the longevity and efficiency of its devices.
