Apple Foldable iPhone Hinge Likely Cheaper Than Expected: Report
Apple's much-anticipated foldable iPhone has been making headlines for quite some time. The Cupertino giant is reportedly gearing up to launch its first foldable device in 2026. According to new reports, the hinge mechanism might be more affordable than earlier estimates. Here's what the latest report suggests.
Apple's Foldable iPhone Hinge Expected to Cost Less
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the hinge for Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to cost around $70-80 at mass production – significantly lower than the earlier market estimates of $100-120 or more.

This notable drop in hinge ASPs (average selling prices) could allow Apple to either cut overall production costs and improve profit margins or pass on the savings to consumers, potentially expanding its market reach.
Foxconn (Hon Hai) and Shin Zu Shing (SZS) have reportedly formed a joint venture to handle orders and production for the foldable iPhone's hinge. Foxconn holds a slightly larger stake in the JV and will lead its strategic direction. The partnership has already secured a substantial 65% share of orders, with Amphenol taking the remaining 35%.
Meanwhile, Luxshare-ICT is also expected to enter the hinge supply chain, possibly as early as after 2027. By teaming up with SZS, Foxconn aims not only to profit from hinge production but also to strengthen its vertical integration strategy alongside its assembly operations.
Apple Foldable iPhone: What We Know So Far
Apple's foldable is expected to feature a book-style design, with a larger inner display, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold series. It is also tipped to house four cameras - one on the front, one on the inside, and two on the back.
Apple might ditch the SIM card slot altogether, opting for eSIM-only support. Another notable change could be the return of Touch ID, replacing Face ID for this model. As of now, Apple is said to be testing the device in just two colour options: black and white.
Moreover, it will likely have a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. When open, it may measure just 4.5mm thick and about 9mm when folded, making it one of the slimmest foldable phones available. The phone is also rumoured to cost around $2,000, approximately Rs 1.72 lakh in India.
