Apple iPhone 15 Can Set Battery Recharge Limit Via iOS 17 Setting To Prolong Life: Will Older Devices Benefit?

Apple Inc. will soon release iOS 17 for its iPhone smartphones. Included in the update is an important feature that can help prolong battery longevity. The latest iPhone 15 series iOS smartphones will be able to limit how much their battery can recharge.

The Apple iPhone 15 series with USB Type-C ports, Bionic A17 SoC, professional-grade camera setup, and other features are here. The iOS 17 OS powering them will be released soon. Let's take a look at one of the most interesting features in the upcoming iOS update.

Battery Charge Limit Feature Included In iOS 17 Update

One of the features that Apple currently offers to help protect batteries inside its Apple iPhone, MacBook laptops, and other portable devices is called "Optimized Battery Charging".

This feature learns users' daily usage patterns and then adjusts the charging schedule to keep the battery at 80 percent charge most of the time the device is plugged into a charger.

While this feature is helpful, it may not be useful for users who have a dynamic schedule that keeps changing. Apple offers to alert users when their devices' battery reaches 100 percent.

Moving forward, iPhone users will be able to limit the charge level of their devices, irrespective of their schedules. This feature is already available on laptops running Windows OS and can be acquired using third-party apps on macOS.

Limiting batteries to 80 percent charge is a common technique to slow down the inevitable degradation process. This is because batteries at a slightly lower charge level heat up less and aren't stressed excessively. Several experts urge setting such limits on devices that remain connected to a charger but have a battery inside them for portability.

Will All iPhones With iOS 17 OS Update Be Able To Limit Battery Recharge Levels?

Several laptops running Windows OS need to have a special application built by the device's manufacturer to limit battery recharge levels. Windows can't control the charging circuitry.

The Battery Charge Limit feature is present in the iOS 17. However, the feature may not work on all Apple iPhone devices that are eligible for iOS 17. This is because Apple may have been able to include the feature due to the presence of the USB-C port on the latest iPhone 15 series devices.

It is possible that Apple could make the feature backward compatible for iPhone 14 and previous generation iOS smartphones. However, the company may need to reprogram its now obsolete proprietary lightning port to enable the new feature.
