Apple may start trial production of new iPhones in Q2
The Cupertino-giant has reportedly taken this decision to avoid manufacturing delays that last year's iPhone X met with.
Apple is expected to launch three iPhones in fall this year. Out of these, two are likely to feature OLED displays just like the iPhone X. Whereas the third model is said to come with an LCD display. Although September is still months away, the company will reportedly begin the trial production of the new iPhones as early as the second quarter of 2018.
According to a new report by DigiTimes, the Cupertino-giant has taken this decision to avoid manufacturing delays that last year's iPhone X met with. Citing Taiwan-based IC design houses, the report also reveals that Apple wants to ensure last year's mishap is not repeated. The company had faced production delay in iPhone X due to problems with the Face ID sensor manufacturing process.
"The kick-off of the trial production will help push ahead the delivery schedules for 2018 iPhone devices so that they will rekindle its smartphone momentum, said the sources, adding that sales of iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X have been lower than expected," the source was quoted was saying.
Previous reports have suggested that all three iPhones launching this year will feature the 3D Face ID. LG Innotek is said to be assigned for the TrueDepth camera production.
KGI Securities Ming Chi Kuo believes that Apple will retain the iPhone X design on its upcoming models. According to him, the two OLED iPhones will feature display sizes of 5.8 inches and 6.5 inches. The LCD model, on the other hand, is said to come with a 6.1-inch display.
The analyst further claims that the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will sport a single rear camera, but the OLED models will be equipped with dual camera setups on their back. In terms of memory, the LCD model is said to pack 3GB of RAM, while the OLED models will pack 4GB of RAM.
Kuo says the 6.1-inch LCD model is expected to cost between $700 and $800, and It is also said to account for "around 50 percent" for iPhone shipments in the Q2 2018 due to its cheap price tag. Apple will likely ship 80 million to 90 million of iPhone units in total in the second quarter.
It is worth mentioning that DigiTimes Research analyst Luke Lin has recently claimed that 5.8-inch OLED model will be the cheapest among the three.
