Apple Now Lets Users Repair iPhones with Used Genuine Parts
Apple has taken a significant step towards enhancing the repairability of iPhones by introducing the option to utilize used genuine parts for repairs. This new initiative, set to begin in the fall for select iPhone models, aiming to maintain the full functionality and security of iPhones, akin to repairs done with new genuine Apple parts.
This move is a departure from Apple's previous stance on part pairing, which restricted the use of parts transferred from one iPhone to another.

New Sustainable and User-friendly Repair Practices
With the introduction of a "parts calibration" process, both individual users and independent repair providers can now replace parts with those from other iPhones without facing restrictions, provided the parts are genuine.
This process ensures that the replaced part is authenticated and calibrated to work seamlessly with the new device, aligning with Apple's commitment to user privacy, security, and safety. Moreover, Apple's efforts over the past two years have been focused on making even biometric sensors reusable.
The upcoming fall updates will enable on-device calibration for all parts once installed, eliminating the need for providing a device's serial number for parts not involving logic board replacements. This update signifies a move towards more sustainable and user-friendly repair practices, allowing for the reuse of critical components like Face ID or Touch ID sensors.
Enhancing iPhone Security
In addition to these changes, Apple is also enhancing the security of iPhone parts by extending Activation Lock to them. This measure aims to deter the use of stolen iPhones for parts by restricting calibration if a part is detected to have been sourced from a device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled.

A unique feature highlighted by Apple is the Parts and Service history available in the iOS Settings. This feature, which will be expanded in the fall, allows iPhone users to access comprehensive parts and repair histories, including information on whether a part is new or a used genuine Apple part.
Brining more Transparency to Apple's Repair Program
This transparency offers users insight into the repair history of their devices, promoting trust and confidence in the repair process. John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability and user experience.
He stated, "At Apple, we're always looking for new ways to deliver the best possible experience for our customers while reducing the impact we have on the planet." Ternus highlighted the innovation in product design and manufacturing aimed at supporting repairs with used Apple parts, ensuring safety, security, and privacy for users.
This latest expansion of Apple's repair program reflects the company's ongoing efforts to offer more choices and convenience to customers, thereby extending the lifespan of its products and their components.
