Apple's 2018 6.1-inch iPhone to feature ‘cover glass sensor’says KGI reports
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kua is back with its yet another research note. The fresh note claims that the 6.1-inch iPhone will skip the 3D touch and include a strong impact-resistant glass.
Apple's upcoming entry-level 6.1-inch iPhone has been in the news for quite a time now. There are many rumors for the phone and today KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kua is back with its yet another research note. The fresh note claims that the 6.1-inch iPhone will skip the 3D touch and include a strong impact-resistant glass.

The note suggests that the phone will come with a"Cover Glass Sensor" technology which will relocate the iPhone's touch module from the display panel to the surface glass. The new CGS technology will make the display lighter and more shock resistant. Along with the CGS, the company is also adding a thin-film sensor to the touch film sensor. But the purpose of the thin-film layer is still not disclosed.
With this new addition, Apple's upcoming iPhone will definitely see a 15 percent increase in the cost of the touch panel. The purchase will be higher by $23 to $26. According to KGI's note, to compensate the high cost of the panel Apple might remove the 3D Touch functionality on the 6.1-inch iPhone 2018. This would be an interesting development as considering Apple's 3D touch is well integrated into the OS at this point.

The other two iPhone models are expected to release in 2018 -the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone and the 6.5-inch OLED smartphone which might be realised as an iPhone X Plus will still continue with the 3D Touch functionality.

Apple is planning to incorporate the CGS display technology into its future iPhones, including OLED models starting in 2019, 3D Touch might be removed from all future iPhones, as per the KGI reports.
However, the mystery behind the thin-film sensor is not revealed in Kuo's note, but it might be some kind of an alternative to the 3D Touch feature.

It's been speculated that Apple is planning to release iPhones upcoming phones with touchless gesture controls in the next few years. Maybe this could be the first step towards that big goal. A gesture-based technology is some around two years away from now. However, so it the film could be some other new input method to replace 3D Touch.
