Apple’s Craig Federighi Says the iPhone Duo Could Replace Your iPad Mini

Finding 'Natural Patterns'

Federighi's answer was to point at history. He compared the situation to the iPad and the Mac, where users eventually settled into what he described as very natural patterns around which device suited which task, without Apple having to prescribe it. He expects the same thing to happen between the iPad and the iPhone Duo over time.

Cannibalising the iPad Mini?

He was more specific about one product in the lineup, though. Federighi acknowledged that for someone who was using an iPad mini, the iPhone Duo could reasonably fill that space. Describing his own use over the past few months, he highlighted a specific workflow:

• Starting a task on the iPhone and then wanting to sit down with a longer piece of content made the device worth unfolding.
• He often uses the unfolded screen in portrait mode to easily read and page through content.

That is a fairly candid admission from an Apple executive about cannibalisation within its own lineup, and it lines up with what a lot of people suspected the moment the Duo was announced.

A Ground-Up Software Approach

The other point Federighi made was about software, which is unsurprising given his role. He argued that rival foldables have largely taken an existing interface and stretched or squeezed it to fit the new form factor. Apple's approach with the Duo was to design the experience for the hardware from the beginning. Whether that holds up in daily use is something reviewers will settle soon enough.

Impact on the Indian Market

For the Indian market, the iPad mini angle is the interesting one. It has quietly held on as the pick for readers, note-takers and anyone who wants a tablet that fits in a jacket pocket. If the Duo genuinely covers that use case, Apple's smallest tablet suddenly has a much harder case to make for itself, at a price point that sits nowhere near the foldable's.
