Apple shares plunge over poor iPhone 8 sales
The bezel-less Apple iPhone X has managed to steal all the limelight and it seems people are not interested in boring iPhone 8
With iPhone X around the corner, Apple's shares fell more than 2.5 percent on Thursday over poor iPhone 8 sales around the globe. It seems smartphone users including Apple fanboys are just not interested in buying the latest Apple iPhone 8, one possible reason being, it's just boring.
The news came out from a report published in a Taipei-based newspaper stating that Apple had cut orders for iPhone 8 by more than 50 per cent owing to poor sales. Interestingly, a KGI report previously stated that the iPhone 8 Plus, at least, was selling better than expected. Moreover, a trend has been noticed where consumers are happy in buying the previous iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus over the new iPhone 8, which has largely failed to appeal masses due to its incremental updates.
As noted, iPhone 8 is not at all a big leap when compared to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. One the other hand, iPhone X is pretty interesting as it has some hugely incremental features such as a bezel-less design, facial recognition, animojis, etc. Technically these features should have been offered with the iPhone 8, but Apple chose to introduce iPhone X on the 10th anniversary.
Several reports around the globe stated that queues outside Apple Stores were shorter than previous years and the premium iPhone X was cited as the main reason. The queues were far fewer than last year's iPhone 7 launch.
As per an IANS report, it is said that iPhone X is cannibalising iPhone 8 orders. "While it takes three to six weeks or more to ship new iPhone models after they are available for preorder, they see the iPhone 8 taking less than one to two weeks. This is due to the iPhone X cannibalisation," Ming-Chi Kuo, the most famous Apple analyst with KGI Securities said recently.
Apple seems to have lost the track with the launch of iPhone 8. The new devices are not appealing as they simply lack the innovation factor and are downright pricey when compared to their Android counterparts.
Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus went on sale on September 22. The iPhone 8 64GB costs Rs 64,000 while the 256GB variant is priced at Rs 77,000. The iPhone 8 Plus starts at Rs 73,000 for 64GB and the 256GB variant costs sells at Rs 86,000. The pre-orders for the premium iPhone X will begin on October 27 and shipping is said to start on November 3. The expected starting price of iPhone X is Rs 89,000 in the Indian market.
If you also think that the new iPhone 8 is not worth buying, you can consider a number of flagship yet comparatively affordable Android smartphones. The list includes LG G6, Sony Xperia XZ1, OnePlus 5, Samsung Galaxy S8, HTC U11, etc.
