Apple to Transition iPhone SE to OLED Displays in 2025, Phasing Out LCDs

Apple's budget-friendly iPhone SE is finally joining the big leagues. A new report by Nikkei Asia suggests that the next iteration, expected in 2025, will ditch the traditional LCD screen in favor of a more modern OLED display.

This move marks the end of an era for Apple's reliance on LCD technology and could have significant implications for display manufacturers.

Report: Apple to Transition iPhone SE to OLED Displays in 2025

Goodbye LCD, Hello OLED

For years, Apple's flagship iPhones have boasted vibrant OLED displays, while the iPhone SE held onto the more cost-effective LCD technology. This is all set to change with the next iteration. By embracing OLED across its entire iPhone lineup, Apple is aligning with industry trends. OLED displays offer superior contrast, deeper blacks, and potentially thinner phone designs compared to LCDs.

Shifting Tides in the Display Market

The move to OLED also signifies a shift in the landscape of display suppliers for Apple. Traditionally, Japanese companies like Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp were major players, providing LCD panels for iPhones. However, neither company currently manufactures OLED screens for smartphones. As a result, the switch to OLED likely means JDI and Sharp will be phased out of Apple's supply chain.

This could spell trouble for these Japanese display giants. Back in 2015, they supplied a staggering 70% of all iPhone displays. Now, with Apple looking towards Samsung, LG, and China's BOE for its OLED needs, JDI and Sharp are forced to adapt. JDI has shifted its focus to supplying smaller OLED displays for devices like the Apple Watch, while Sharp is reportedly scaling back its LCD business altogether.

What This Means for Consumers

The transition to OLED in the next iPhone SE could translate to a more premium experience for users at a potentially more accessible price point. While specific details remain unknown, we might see a thinner phone design, sharper visuals, and improved battery life. However, with any new technology, there's always the possibility of a price increase.
