BIS Screen Protector Rules Explained: What Changes for Buyers From April 2027

Smartphone screen protectors sold in India will come under a mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirement from April 1, 2027. The new rule will require manufacturers and importers to ensure that screen protectors comply with Indian Standard IS 19348:2025.

Companies have time until March 31, 2027, to bring their products into compliance. The move is expected to bring more standardisation to India's largely unorganised screen protector market.

What is the new BIS rule for screen protectors?

Under the new requirement, screen protectors sold in India will need to meet specifications covering material quality, thickness, dimensions, coatings and packaging information.

The standard applies to more than traditional tempered glass. It also covers products such as:

• Tempered glass screen protectors
• Protective films
• Anti-shatter films
• Oleophobic-coated protectors
• Anti-glare films
• Blue-light filtering protectors
• Privacy films

This means manufacturers and importers will need to ensure their products meet the specified quality and material requirements before placing them on the Indian market.

Will existing screen protector stock be banned?

Not immediately. The government has provided a transition period until March 31, 2027, giving manufacturers and importers time to meet the new requirements.

From April 1, 2027, screen protectors placed on the Indian market will need to comply with IS 19348:2025. The change could particularly affect inexpensive, unbranded products and generic imports that currently provide limited information about their materials or manufacturing.

Will screen protectors become more expensive?

Prices could increase for some products as manufacturers factor in testing, certification, packaging and quality-control costs. However, the impact is unlikely to be the same across the entire market.

Established accessory brands that already maintain consistent manufacturing and packaging standards may have an easier transition, while manufacturers relying on cheaper materials or inconsistent sourcing could face higher compliance costs.

What does the BIS rule mean for consumers?

The biggest change for consumers could be better product information and accountability. Compliant products are expected to provide clearer details such as manufacturer information, batch details and product specifications.

The standard could also encourage more consistent dimensions and materials, potentially reducing problems such as poor fitting around cameras, sensors, curved display edges and in-display fingerprint scanners.

Buyers should also remember that marketing claims such as "9H hardness", "anti-glare" or "blue-light protection" do not necessarily guarantee a particular level of performance unless supported by appropriate testing or certification.

Do you need to replace your screen protector now?

No. The April 1, 2027 deadline means there is no immediate requirement for consumers to replace existing screen protectors.

For now, buyers can continue purchasing screen protectors as usual, but choosing products from identifiable and traceable manufacturers can provide greater clarity about what they are buying.

Once the BIS requirement takes effect, India's screen protector market could become more organised, with greater standardisation, clearer labelling and stronger accountability for manufacturers and importers.
