CES 2018: Motorola unveils two new health and keyboard Moto Mods

From a Polaroid camera attachment to a dedicated gamepad to a wireless charging-enabled back shell Motorola has been quite steady in bringing out new Moto Mods for its Moto Z family of smartphones. And it seems that the company is keeping its streak alive. At CES 2018, Motorola has yet again announced two new Moto Mods.

Motorola's parent company Lenovo has actually developed the first Moto Mod. Dubbed as Lenovo Vital Moto Mod, it enables users to track five key vital signs - heart rate, respiratory rate, Pulse Ox, core body temperature and systolic, and diastolic blood pressure. The Mod has an infrared temperature sensor, a finger clip for measuring oxygen, and an inflatable finger cuff. The mod's proprietary finger cuff with advanced sensors measures things like blood pressure. Motorola has said that the test can be completed in three minutes to run all five tests further allowing users to do it anytime and anywhere. The Lenovo Vital Moto Mod comes out in April for $395 (roughly Rs. 25,177).

The second Moto Mod has been created by Livermorium, a company which won Motorola's Transform the Smartphone Challenge hosted in 2017. TalKing about the mod, the Livermorium Slider Keyboard attaches to the rear of Moto Z device and features a full QWERTY keyboard. On attaching the mod the phone can slide up to about 60-degrees to reveal a full, backlit keyboard. The Slider Keyboard will hit the market later this winter and probably be priced at $99 (roughly Rs. 6,310).

Meanwhile, the success of Livermorium has encouraged Motorola to continue its "Transform the Smartphone Challenge" in 2018 to make more mods. The company is currently accepting applications and has said, "now through February 6, submit your idea for a chance to receive a moto z phone, Moto Mod Development Kit (MDK) and support from the Indiegogo team to launch a successful crowdfunding campaign. The grand prize winners will receive a trip to our headquarters in Chicago to meet with the moto mods executive development team and discuss how to bring their ideas to life."
