Corning Unveils Gorilla Glass 7i: Bringing Premium Protection to Mid-Range Phones
Corning has unveiled a new addition to its Gorilla Glass family - Gorilla Glass 7i. This iteration focuses on improving the durability of mid-range and budget smartphones, making high-quality protection more accessible.
Improved Drop and Scratch Resistance
Gorilla Glass 7i is engineered to withstand drops of up to one meter onto rough surfaces like asphalt. This surpasses the performance of competing glasses commonly found in mid-range phones, which often break from falls at lower heights.

Furthermore, Gorilla Glass 7i boasts twice the scratch resistance of its competitors. This allows mid-range devices to enjoy a similar level of protection against everyday wear and tear as their premium counterparts.
Targeting a Growing Need
The introduction of Gorilla Glass 7i addresses the increasing use of older Gorilla Glass versions in recently launched mid-range phones. Devices like the Nothing Phone (2a) and Poco F6 Pro still rely on Gorilla Glass 5, a technology introduced in 2016.
With larger and higher-quality displays becoming commonplace in mid-range phones (think Pixel 8a with Gorilla Glass 3 from 2013), there's a growing need for a modern and affordable solution for improved protection.
OPPO Leads the Way
Corning has announced that OPPO will be the first smartphone manufacturer to adopt Gorilla Glass 7i. This suggests we might see the new glass on upcoming OPPO A and F series devices, such as the A3 Pro or F27 Pro. Specific details regarding these phones are expected to be revealed soon.
Gorilla Glass 7i's capabilities extend beyond smartphones. It can also be used in other devices like smartwatches that require scratch and drop resistance.
