End of an Era! Meizu Exits Smartphone Business to Go All in on AI

Meizu, a prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturer, recently announced a significant shift in its business direction, marking the end of its journey in the Android smartphone sector. This announcement came following the launch of the Meizu 21 in November 2023, which is poised to be the company's final traditional smartphone offering.

In a strategic pivot, Meizu has declared its intent to delve into the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to develop an ecosystem of both software and hardware solutions centered around AI technologies.

Meizu Exits Smartphone Business

The decision to exit the smartphone business isn't a first for Meizu. The company had previously transitioned away from manufacturing MP3 devices in 2007, embarking on a new path in the smartphone industry.

This move is underscored by an official statement from Li Nan, Meizu's former marketing director, through a Weibo post, and was further confirmed by the company through a video statement on its website.

The Rationale Behind the Shift

In explaining the rationale behind this strategic pivot, Meizu's CEO, Ziyu Shen, pointed out the significant changes in the smartphone market as the primary catalyst. He noted an interesting trend where users now take an average of 51 months, or a little over four years, to upgrade their smartphones.

This shift, coupled with intensified competition from rival brands offering comparable performance in terms of device smoothness, photographic capabilities, and software experience, has prompted Meizu to fully embrace AI technologies.

Meizu plans to transform its existing Flyme OS, originally designed for smartphones, into an operating system tailored for AI devices. Furthermore, the company is in the process of developing a new mobile OS with a focus on integrating AI features into smartphones.

Shen hinted at exploring different form factors by referencing devices like Humane's AI Pin and Rabbit R1, indicating a broad vision for Meizu's future in AI-driven hardware and software solutions.

Commitment to Support and Future Direction

Despite this significant shift, Meizu assures continued support for its existing smartphone lineup in China, alongside maintaining its offline retail presence. However, it remains uncertain if this support will extend to international markets.

With the Meizu 21 potentially marking the end of Meizu's smartphone era, the tech community is left to wonder about the fate of speculated future models such as the Meizu 21 Pro or Meizu 22 series.

Moreover, Meizu has teased the unveiling of its inaugural AI hardware later this year, though specifics regarding the product remain undisclosed.
