Fairphone Gen. 6+ Launched with 12 Replaceable Parts, Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, 9 Years of Updates, 120Hz Display

Sustainable smartphone maker Fairphone has officially launched the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) in the US, marking the company's first direct retail smartphone launch in the country. The new device targets consumers looking for premium hardware with a stronger focus on repairability and sustainability.

The Fairphone Gen. 6+ is priced at $649 (approximately Rs. 62,135) and is sold fully unlocked, with support for major networks including AT&T and T-Mobile. It comes with a five-year hardware warranty, while replacement parts will remain available until 2033.

Fairphone Gen. 6+ Launched with Modular Design and 9 Years of Updates

Fairphone Gen. 6+ Focuses on Repairability

The biggest highlight of the Fairphone Gen. 6+ is its modular construction. The smartphone has 12 user-replaceable components, including the battery, display, USB-C port and back cover.

Users can replace these parts with a single standard screwdriver, with common repairs taking less than five minutes. The phone has also received a 10/10 repairability rating from iFixit.

Despite its modular design, the phone offers an IP55 rating and has undergone durability testing, including 1.5-metre concrete drop tests and more than 70,000 bend tests.

Sustainable Materials and Ethical Manufacturing

Fairphone says 51 percent of the Gen. 6+'s weight consists of fair or recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, copper, steel and zinc. The company also uses ethically sourced gold and cobalt.

The smartphone is described as e-waste neutral and has a reported carbon footprint of 29.3kg of CO2 equivalent. Its Cobalt Blue colour option also highlights Fairphone's support for the Fair Cobalt Alliance.

The company's assembly facility participates in a living wage bonus programme, which has distributed more than $1.25 million in worker bonuses since 2019.

Fairphone Gen. 6+ Specifications

The Fairphone Gen. 6+ features a 6.31-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 10Hz-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, HDR10 support and up to 1,400 nits of automatic outdoor brightness. The panel is protected by 0.7mm Gorilla Glass 7i.

Under the hood is the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. Storage can be expanded by up to 2TB using a microSD card.

The phone packs a 4,415mAh removable battery with 27W fast charging. Fairphone claims it can reach 50 percent charge in around 30 minutes and deliver nearly 18 hours of continuous web browsing.

For photography, there is a 50MP Sony primary camera with OIS, a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP front camera.

Android 16 and Nine Years of Updates

The Fairphone Gen. 6+ runs Android 16 and offers a clean software experience without unwanted third-party apps. Fairphone promises six major Android upgrades and security updates through 2033, providing up to nine years of software support.

Connectivity options include 5G with NSA and SA support, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. The phone supports dual-SIM functionality through a nano-SIM and eSIM.

Fairphone Fairbuds 2 Announced

Fairphone has also announced the Fairbuds 2 modular wireless earbuds, scheduled to launch in Q4 this year. Like the smartphone, the earbuds will focus on repairability and longer-term ownership.

The Fairphone Gen. 6+ combines modern specifications with modular hardware, recycled materials and long-term software support, making it one of the company's strongest attempts yet to challenge the conventional smartphone upgrade cycle.
