We may see a future Samsung phone with in-display fingerprint scanner and selfie camera
In an attempt to make a fully edge-to-edge display phone, Samsung wants to integrate the front camera and sensors into the display itself.
If we were to guess which trend would make to the world to the smartphone world in the coming years, it would be the under-screen fingerprint scanner. Vivo has already managed to showcase a smartphone with this feature and more manufacturers are going to follow suit. It goes without saying, others are working on their version of under-screen in-display fingerprint scanner. Samsung, for instance, not only trying to embed the fingerprint scanner into the display, but also the camera. Yes, you heard that right.
Well, the publication Lets Go Digital has found this out from the latest filed by the South Korean tech giant at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). In an attempt to make a fully edge-to-edge display phone, Samsung chose to integrate the front camera and sensors into the display itself. As explained by the company in the patent, the display will have holes to make room for the camera and sensors.
While in paper this sounds just perfect, putting it in practice won't be that easy. But if it actually gets launched eventually, we will see a smartphone with a screen-to-body ratio of 100 percent. How exciting does that sound?
The patent also shows another variant of the device, which has a similar notch at the top that we have seen on the Essential Phone or the iPhone X. However, it is unlikely for Samsung to adapt the same design as its main rival Apple.
As is often the case, just because Samsung has filed a patent for a phone with in-display fingerprint scanner and camera, there is no guarantee that it will be launched in future. There has many instances where companies file patents for a particular device or a technology, but forget all about it later on. Also, sometimes it doesn't work out the way in reality as it was envisioned in the patent.
In November last year, we came across another Samsung patent that also showed a phone featuring an under-screen fingerprint scanner. At that time, it was speculated that the flagship Galaxy S9 may come with this feature. However, recent leaks and reports have revealed that it won't be the case. In any case, it is good to know that companies are experimenting with new technologies.
