Gionee Elife E8: 10 Best and Worst Features of Camera-Centric Smartphone

|

After launching in China two months back, Gionee have finally brought their flagship device to the country. Dubbed the Gionee Elife E8 the device comes with a 2.0GHz octa core Mediatek X10 Helio Chip under the hood along with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

As expected from an E series handset of Gionee, the Elife E8 is a camera centric device touting a large 24MP sensor with OIS and PDAF sensor on the back. Below that is a Fingerprint sensor which works rather well.

The Chinese OEM however have priced the device a tad high at Rs 34,000 via Snapdeal. Apparently it is the first time the company is launching a device exclusively via an online e-commerce site. So let's dig deep into the Elife E8 to find out the best and the worst features of the smartphone.

The front of the Gionee Elife E8 sports a 6 inch QHD (2560x1440) AMOLED display which renders excellent saturated colour. As expected, the display has great viewing angles and is bright enough to be visible in direct sunlight.

Gionee has packed a top of the tier camera on the back of the Elife E8 - the E series of devices are meant to be camera centric devices after all. The 24M AF unit comes with dual tone LED flash and Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) for faster focusing times.

The Chinese company had got the camera spot on with their E7 and we expect nothing different this time. The camera also comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).

A neat software trick that allows the Gionee Elife E8 to shoot 120MP. Basically the camera stitches five 24MP shots and overlaps them to create a super high resolution photo. A similar technology was first implemented by Oppo in their Find 7.

Best:

Gionee has packed in a large 3520mAh Li-Poly battery on the back of the Gionee Elife E8. Secondly the Chinese OEM has opted for a Mediatek 6795 SoC which is far lighter on the battery as compared to the Snapdragon 810. Hence expect stupendous battery life from this device.

Best:

Best:

Just like flagship of present date, the Elife E8 comes with a Fingerprint sensor on the back of the device. The sensor located on the back of the device works as per our expectations.

Worst:

Below the excellent 6 inch QHD panel are the three capacitive buttons which sadly aren't backlit. This is the worst part of the Gionee Elife E8. Non backlit buttons are generally found in cheap budget device, hence it would be interesting to figure out why the Chinese OEM decided to skimp on the light.

Worst:

Since the launch of the Asus Zenfone 2, 4GB RAMs has become the norm of the day for flagships. Hence it's disappointing to see a reputed Chinese OEM like Gionee skimp on RAM and include just a 3GB inside. Add to that the presence of a RAM hungry Amigo UI.

Worst:

Worst:

In case you are used to a Xiaomi device, then shifting to the Amigo 3.0 would be pain - at least initially. The UI is much improved over its predecessor as found on the Elife E7, however it's still laggy with quite a no of bugs. The heavy animations and effects takes a toll on the RAM too.

Worst:

Worst:

While Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 with a same chip inside is available in China for just 799 Yuan (Rs 8,000 approx.) the Rs 34,000 price tag of the Gionee Elife E8 will appear quite steep to many.

Yes, it true that using a Mediatek X10 Helio chip in place of the Qualcomm 810 is a much better proposition. However, considering the lower price of Mediatek SoC, Gionee should have priced the E8 a tad lower at Rs 30,000.

Worst:

While this might not be a major issue for many out there considering the fact that the most flagships of present day come with non-removable Li-Poly battery, some users are still irked by the issue.
